Resume template for working students (Werkstudent)

Short answer

FAANGPath fits a working student in a technical field: SQL, Python and Power BI print above the jobs, then the working student role itself, a degree project and education. The fictional sample is a data science master's student in Cologne working 18 hours a week in business intelligence and applying for her next working student role. The layout works for anyone holding a job alongside a degree.

Why FAANGPath suits a working student resume

FAANGPath prints skills under the summary and before work experience, so the tools a student has already used on real company data are read before job titles that are still modest. Its minimal, centred black and grey layout is aimed at technical candidates, which suits analytics and engineering working student postings.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian has the same order with no colour and heading rules running to the right; use it for working student roles outside tech, such as marketing or finance.

What goes in each section, in FAANGPath's order

FAANGPath prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Give the degree, the expected finish date and the weekly hours you can work during the semester. Working student roles are planned around those hours, so a number (18, 20) is more useful than "part-time".
  2. Skills. Put the tools you use in the current job first, because they are proven on real data, then the ones from your degree. Languages go here too, with a level (native, C1) if the posting asks for German, English or both.
  3. Work Experience. Write the working student job like a junior job: what you built, who uses it, how often. Put the weekly hours in the first bullet, since they explain why the output is smaller than a full-time analyst's.
  4. Projects. One degree project on real data shows independent work. Choose one close to the job, such as forecasting for an operations team or text analysis for a marketing one.
  5. Education. The master's comes first with "Expected" and the month, then the bachelor's. A strong grade can be added when the posting asks for one.

How to make the sample yours

Write down the hours you can work

University of Göttingen guidance puts the limit for full-time students at 20 hours a week during the lecture period, with more hours possibly allowed in the lecture-free period. State your semester hours and say if you can do more in the breaks.

Non-EU students: check your own limit

The same guidance gives non-EU students an annual limit of 140 full days or 280 half days (as of 2024), with working student hours of up to 20 a week as an alternative. Check the conditions on your residence permit before agreeing to hours.

Use both terms in the title

"Working Student (Werkstudentin), Business Intelligence" reads naturally in English and still matches German searches and job titles. Use the title on your contract.

Keep the university job

A student assistant or tutor role shows you can explain numbers to people, which analytics teams need. Two bullets are enough.

Working while studying outside Germany?

The structure still applies: weekly hours in the summary, the job written like a junior role, a project from your degree and the expected graduation month in education.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving the weekly hours out. A team lead has to plan a rota around them.
  • Showing a graduation date earlier than the end of the role you want. Working student jobs are for enrolled students, so the dates need to fit.
  • Using a different title from your contract, such as calling a working student job an internship or the reverse.
  • Rating languages with stars or bars. Give a level instead (native, C1, B2).

Frequently asked questions

What is a working student?

In Germany, a working student (Werkstudent) is a student employed alongside their studies above marginal employment. University of Göttingen guidance defines them as students employed while studying who are not marginally employed, which it puts at earning more than 603 euros a month (2026 figure).

How many hours can a working student work?

Göttingen's guidance puts the limit for full-time students at 20 hours a week during the lecture period, with more hours possibly allowed in the lecture-free period. Put the hours you can work in your summary.

Should a working student resume be in German or English?

Use the language of the posting. If it is in English but the team works in German, list your German level in the skills section so the reader does not have to ask.

How long should a working student resume be?

One page. A degree in progress, one or two student jobs, a project and skills fit comfortably on it.

Does a working student job count as experience after graduating?

Yes. Keep it with its real title and dates; it is professional experience, and often the strongest entry on a new graduate's page.

Will applicant tracking systems read this FAANGPath PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
