Resume template for high school students
Short answer
Henrietta works well for a high school student: with no jobs to list, it prints your school, GPA and classes directly under the summary, then skills, a school project and your activities. The fictional sample is a junior applying for weekend and summer jobs, with volunteering, a book drive and two clubs. School leavers can use the same layout with a finished diploma date.

Why Henrietta suits a high school student resume
Henrietta prints education straight after experience, so when you have no jobs the school entry sits right under the summary. For a teenager, school is the longest and easiest thing on the page to check, and the plain black and grey business look suits library, store and office applications.
Second choice: Meridian. Meridian puts skills and projects ahead of education; choose it if a school project or a self-taught skill is more impressive than your grades.
What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order
Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Two or three sentences: your grade, the kind of job you want and when you can work. Most teen jobs are weekend, after-school or summer shifts, so your availability belongs here.
- Education. School name, city and expected graduation year, then GPA if it is good, honor roll and a few classes linked to the job, such as a language for customer-facing work.
- Skills. Practical things you can do on day one: typing speed, a second language, spreadsheets, basic coding. Henrietta prints them in a grid with no labels, so put the most job-relevant ones first.
- Projects. A school or club project with a real outcome (books collected, an event run, a website built) shows you can organize work. Give it a date and two or three bullets.
- Activities and volunteering. Activities and volunteering print at the end under one heading. Include anything regular that shows reliability: weekly volunteering, a sports season, a club role with a duty attached.

How to make the sample yours
Change the target in the summary for each application
A day camp wants patience with children; a grocery store wants reliability and cash skills. Rewrite the first sentence for the job in front of you.
Add a job as soon as you have one
If you have babysat, mowed lawns or worked a summer, add a Work Experience entry. Henrietta then prints it above your school entry, the right order once real work exists.
Pick activities that prove a habit
Volunteering every Saturday for two years says more than six one-off events. Keep the dates so the commitment shows.
Ask a teacher or coach to be a reference
Employers hiring teenagers often want an adult who can speak for you. Ask first, then keep their name and phone number on a separate sheet.
Leaving school? Swap "Expected" for the finished date
School leavers should write the month they finished and any final grades or exam results that matter for the job, and change the summary from part-time work to full-time work or an apprenticeship.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.
- working with children
- bilingual
- reliable
- organization
- typing
- Google Docs and Sheets
- customer service
- cash handling
- teamwork
- volunteer
- honor roll
- summer availability
Mistakes to avoid
- Listing middle school awards. Start with high school; anything earlier looks like filler.
- Writing "References available on request". It is assumed, and the line is better used for an activity.
- Inflating a role, such as calling yourself club president when you were a member. Teachers and coaches are often the references who get called.
- Stretching the page to two. At this stage everything fits on one page with room to spare.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a resume as a high school student with no job?
Lead with your school, grades and relevant classes, then add skills, a school or club project, and your activities and volunteering. Each item needs a date and a sentence about what you did.
Do I need a resume for a part-time job at 16?
Many hourly jobs only ask for an application form, but a one-page resume helps when you apply in person or by email, and it makes the form quicker to fill in.
What is the difference between a school leaver CV and a high school resume?
Mostly the word and the timing. A school leaver has finished school and wants full-time work or an apprenticeship, so the summary says so and the education entry shows a finished date and final results.
How far back should a high school resume go?
Start with ninth grade. Middle school awards and activities rarely belong unless you have kept them up since.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 3 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
