Resume template for an internship application
Short answer
For an internship application, Meridian prints your tools and methods first, then any campus job, then the projects that usually carry a student's case, with education below. The fictional sample is a third-year mechanical engineering student with a machine shop job, a racing team role and a course build, applying for a summer internship. Business and science students can follow the same structure.

Why Meridian suits a student internship resume
Meridian puts skills above experience and projects above education, which suits a student whose evidence is software and team builds rather than past internships. It has no colour, so printed copies handed out at a career fair stay crisp.
Second choice: FAANGPath. FAANGPath has the same section order with full-width heading rules; it is the closer fit for computer science students listing languages and frameworks.
What goes in each section, in Meridian's order
Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Say what year you are in, which area you want to intern in and the months you are free. Internships run on set dates, so "available 05/2027 to 08/2027" answers a real question.
- Skills. Lead with the software and methods that internship postings in your field name. Keep levels honest: "basic FEA" beats claiming expertise a technical interviewer will test.
- Work Experience. Any paid job counts, but a campus lab, shop or research role is worth three bullets. With no job at all, leave this section out and Meridian moves straight to projects.
- Projects. For most students this is the main section. Name the team or course, your part of the work and a measured outcome: weight saved, a test result, a deadline met.
- Education. Degree, expected graduation month, GPA if it helps and the core courses an engineer reviewing the page would expect by your year.
- Certifications. A software certification such as a CAD associate exam shows initiative. It prints near the end, so if it is central to the role, mention it in the summary as well.

How to make the sample yours
Swap the racing team for your own strongest build
A robotics club, a research lab, a hackathon or a case competition all fit here. Choose work where you can name your own part, not just the team's result.
Tune the skills row for each internship type
Manufacturing postings ask for drawings, tolerancing and shop experience; design postings for CAD and simulation; business postings for Excel and presenting. Reorder to match.
Add a portfolio link if you have photos of your work
A short page with photos of your parts or screenshots of your models lets an interviewer see the work. Put the link in the header next to LinkedIn.
Use the same dates everywhere
Write your available months in the summary and give the same dates in the application form, so nobody has to email you to check.
Shrink unrelated campus work to a line or two
A business student's campus job might be at the career center or a dining hall. Keep it, but cut the bullets to one or two so the projects stay in front.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.
- SolidWorks
- CAD
- engineering drawings
- GD&T
- MATLAB
- FEA
- prototyping
- design for manufacturing
- test data
- technical writing
- machine shop safety
- teamwork
- summer internship
Mistakes to avoid
- Listing a project as "Team member" with no word on your own contribution.
- Leaving out the months you can work. A summer program needs to know you are free for its whole run.
- Rating software skills with stars or bars. Write the level in words, or show it through a project.
- Including every class you have taken. Four courses that match the internship are plenty.
How the sample PDF reads in text extractors
We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.

Frequently asked questions
What should I put on a resume for my first internship?
Your degree in progress, skills and tools, any job, and two or three projects from classes, clubs or your own time. Projects usually do most of the work on a first internship resume.
Can I apply for an internship with no experience?
Yes. Internships are designed for students without professional experience, so course projects, clubs and part-time jobs are the evidence readers expect. Give them detail and dates.
How do I list a group project on an internship resume?
Name the project and the team or course, then write bullets about the part you did yourself: the component you designed, the test you ran, the report section you wrote.
How long should an internship resume be?
One page. A student resume that runs over usually has course lists or duty descriptions that can go.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
