Resume template for no work experience

Short answer

Meridian works best when you have never held a job. It prints skills straight after the summary and, with no work history to show, moves directly to projects and then education, so your strongest evidence lands near the top. The fictional sample is a business student with no paid jobs: two projects, a food pantry volunteer role and an Excel credential.

Why Meridian suits a no experience resume

Meridian prints skills above experience and projects above education. With the work history empty, the page reads summary, skills, projects, education, so two solid projects fill the space a job would normally take. It uses no colour, so a printed copy for a walk-in application or a career fair stays clean.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta prints education straight after experience, so on a resume with no jobs the degree or diploma sits right under the summary, which helps when your grades are your best evidence.

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. With no jobs to list, the summary does the work an objective used to: name the role you want, the qualification you are finishing and when, and two things you can already do, each backed up further down the page.
  2. Skills. Only list skills a project, a course or the volunteer role below can prove. Software you use every week (Excel, Google Workspace) counts; "fast learner" does not, because nothing on the page shows it.
  3. Projects. This is where a job would normally go, so treat each project like one: what it was for, who used the result, and two or three bullets that start with a verb. Volunteer builds, class projects with a real client and personal projects all qualify.
  4. Education. Qualification, school and expected date. Add your GPA if it is strong and three or four courses that match the posting; if the GPA is middling, leave it off and let the courses carry the entry.
  5. Certifications. A short credential such as an Excel or first aid certificate is real evidence when no employer can vouch for you. Give the issuer and year, and mention the most relevant one in the summary too, since this section prints near the end.
  6. Volunteer work. Volunteering prints last under its own title. Lead with ongoing roles and describe them the way you would a shift at work; a one-off event earns a line only if you did something specific there.

Tucson, AZ | tessa.morales@example.com | (520) 555-0136 | linkedin.com/in/sample-tessa-morales

Business administration student finishing an A.A.S. in December 2026 and looking for a first office assistant role. Builds tidy spreadsheets, writes clear emails and keeps records organized, shown in two team projects and a year of weekly volunteering.

Projects

Food pantry inventory tracker: Volunteer project for Desert Bloom Food Pantry, built in Excel, 01/2026 to 04/2026.

  • Replaced a paper sign-out sheet with a shared spreadsheet that logs donations and weekly stock counts.
  • Added a low-stock tab that the coordinator now checks before each Saturday distribution.
  • Wrote a one-page guide so other volunteers can update the sheet without help.

Marketing plan for a neighborhood bakery (Principles of Marketing): Four-person course project for a real local business, presented to the owner, fall 2025.

  • Surveyed 40 shoppers and summarized the results in a short slide deck.
  • Drafted the budget section and kept the team schedule in a shared calendar.

Volunteer work

  • Saturday volunteer, Desert Bloom Food Pantry, 09/2025 to Present: check in clients, pack orders and train new volunteers on the sign-in desk.
  • Open house helper, Saguaro Valley Community College, 03/2026: greeted families and answered questions about the business program.

Associate of Applied Science, Business Administration, Saguaro Valley Community College (Expected 12/2026). GPA 3.7. Coursework: Business Communication, Financial Accounting I, Spreadsheet Applications

Certifications

  • Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Associate, Microsoft (2026)

How to make the sample yours

Swap the projects for your own best two

Pick the two pieces of work with a real result: a spreadsheet someone still uses, an event you organised, a website for a club. If you only have one, a single strong project beats three thin ones.

Turn volunteer duties into actions

"Helped at the food pantry" says little. Name the tasks (checked in clients, packed orders, trained new volunteers) and how often you did them.

Rewrite the first line for each kind of job

The sample targets office work. For retail or a call centre, change the target role in the summary and move customer-facing skills to the front of the skills list.

Leave Work Experience empty instead of padding it

Do not invent a job entry for school or chores. With nothing in that section, Meridian skips the heading and your projects move up into its place.

Date every project and volunteer role

Months and years matter here just as they do for jobs. Use the real dates; an interviewer may ask the volunteer coordinator or your instructor to confirm them.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • Microsoft Excel
  • data entry
  • record keeping
  • customer service
  • scheduling
  • written communication
  • team project
  • volunteer experience
  • Google Workspace

  • time management

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing "no experience" or apologising for it anywhere on the page. State what you have done and let the missing job section go unremarked.
  • Listing traits such as "hard-working" or "team player" with nothing below them that shows it.
  • Turning a family errand or a school assignment into a job title with an invented employer.
  • Filling space with hobbies that say nothing about the job. One relevant interest is plenty.

Frequently asked questions

What do I put on a resume if I have never had a job?

Projects, volunteering, coursework, school or club roles and any certificate you have earned. Write each one with dates and two or three action bullets, as you would a job.

Should a resume with no experience have an objective or a summary?

A short summary that names the job you want does the same work as an objective and reads better. Two or three sentences are enough.

How long should a resume with no experience be?

One page. If it looks empty, add a second project or more detail to the volunteer role before you think about design changes.

Do class projects count as experience?

They count as evidence, not as employment. List them under Projects rather than Work Experience, and say who the work was for if there was a real client or user.

What skills can I list if I have never worked?

Software you use (spreadsheets, documents, design tools), languages, typing speed, first aid, and anything a project shows, such as running an event. Leave out personality traits unless something on the page backs them up.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 5 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
