Resume template for a stretch job you are underqualified for

Short answer

Daniel suits a stretch application, where you meet most of a posting but not all of it. It prints your skills grid before your jobs, so the work you can already do is read before the years you are short. The fictional sample is an associate product manager with two and a half years of experience, applying for product manager roles that ask for three to five.

Why Daniel suits an underqualified (stretch job) resume

Daniel prints the skills grid directly under the summary, ahead of work experience, so discovery, testing and specs are read before anyone counts years. It suits product managers and designers, and its rounded grey heading pills give a softer look than a page built only from rules.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian has the same skills-before-experience order with plain grey rules, the safer pick when the stretch job is in a conservative field such as banking.

Daniel template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Daniel's order

Daniel prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Lead with evidence that you already do parts of the bigger job: what you own, how many users, how many releases. Leave the requirement you miss unmentioned; the dates show it anyway, and the summary should give a reason to keep reading.
  2. Skills. Mirror the posting's required skills where you have them, in its order. Daniel prints the grid without group labels, so the target role's core skills belong in the first column.
  3. Work Experience. Bullets should show work above your title: the months you covered the senior role, decisions you made, people you led without authority. Keep your real title; the bullets make the argument.
  4. Education. One line is enough. An unrelated degree, here psychology, can stay plain; if a course links to the job, such as research methods or statistics, add it in the detail line.

How to make the sample yours

Mark the requirements you meet before you write

Copy the posting's requirements into a list and tick the ones you meet. If most are ticked, apply, and make sure each ticked item appears on the page in the posting's own words.

Show the gap closing

Short on years? Show pace: a promotion inside two years, a larger scope each year, a stretch assignment. The sample's three months covering for a product manager say more than another year of tenure would.

Replace "exposure to" with actions

"Exposure to roadmapping" reads as watching. "Ran quarterly planning for the onboarding squad" reads as doing. Rewrite any bullet that describes being near the work.

Use the cover letter for the one thing you lack

If a single requirement is clearly missing, such as a domain you have not worked in, address it in one sentence of the cover letter with how you would close it. Keep the resume about what you have.

Ask someone in the target role to read it

A product manager at another company can tell you in five minutes whether your bullets read like product work or support work. Rewrite the ones they skip over.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • product management
  • product discovery
  • A/B testing
  • user stories
  • acceptance criteria
  • roadmap
  • prioritization
  • funnel analysis
  • subscriptions
  • onboarding
  • stakeholder management
  • Amplitude
  • SQL
  • mobile apps

Mistakes to avoid

  • Inflating your title to match the job you want. "Associate" stays; the scope in the bullets makes the case.
  • Rounding two and a half years up to "three years" in the summary. The dates on the page do the maths for the reader.
  • Adding skills you have only read about to match the posting. Interviewers test the ones that look out of place.
  • Apologising for the gap ("Although I have less experience than required..."). Make the case with evidence and let the reader decide.

Frequently asked questions

Should I apply for a job if I do not meet all the requirements?

If you meet most of the core ones, usually yes. A posting describes an ideal hire; the resume's job is to show how close you are, with evidence for each requirement you do meet.

How do I make up for fewer years of experience than the posting asks for?

Show scope and pace instead of time: the size of what you own, a promotion, a period covering a senior role, results with numbers. Years are a stand-in for those things.

Should my resume mention a requirement I lack?

No. The resume shows what you have. If one missing requirement is obvious and important, a sentence in the cover letter about how you would close it is enough.

Is it worth applying for a job two levels above mine?

One level up is a normal stretch. Two levels is a long shot unless you already do much of that work, in which case the bullets have to show it clearly.

How do I list skills I am still learning?

Only list a skill you could use in your first month. State the level honestly ("SQL, intermediate") or show it through a bullet rather than listing it bare.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Daniel PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
