Resume template for an overqualified candidate

Short answer

Meridian helps an overqualified candidate look the right size for the job. It prints hands-on skills above experience, so account management, renewals and pricing are read before the director title. The fictional sample is a former regional sales director with 19 years in industrial packaging, applying for senior account manager roles, with management detail trimmed and the oldest jobs folded into one line.

Why Meridian suits an overqualified resume

Meridian puts the skills row above work experience, so the account work this candidate wants to do again is the first evidence a hiring manager meets, ahead of the director title. Its plain layout with no colour reads as experienced and practical rather than as an executive resume.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta prints experience first in a conventional business look; pick it when your most senior title is only one step above the job you want.

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Say plainly that you want the level you are applying for, and why, in one clause: hands-on work, less travel, a return to customers. Without it, a reader assumes you will leave at the next director opening.
  2. Skills. List the individual contributor skills the posting asks for and leave out executive ones such as P&L ownership or board reporting unless the job mentions them. This row tells the reader what you will do every day.
  3. Work Experience. Keep every real title, but choose bullets about the work you still do yourself. For a senior individual role, one bullet on leading people is plenty; three would pitch you for a job you are not applying for.
  4. Education. Degree and school are enough. Leaving the graduation year off is a common choice in a long career and hides nothing the reader needs.
  5. Earlier experience. Fold roles older than about fifteen years into one short list with a line each. They show where you started without pages of detail from an earlier era of the work.

Catherine Doyle

Senior Account Manager, Industrial Packaging

Cincinnati, OH | catherine.doyle@example.com | (513) 555-0164 | linkedin.com/in/sample-catherine-doyle

Account manager with 19 years selling and managing industrial packaging accounts, most recently as regional sales director. Now returning to a hands-on senior account manager role, looking after a book of manufacturing customers rather than a team. Keeps renewals on track, negotiates annual pricing and knows the packaging line from the plant floor up.

Experience

Regional Sales Director, Ohio Valley Packaging Supply, Cincinnati, OH (03/2017 to 07/2026)

  • Kept personal ownership of the region's five largest accounts, about $6M in annual sales, alongside leading nine account managers.
  • Renewed all five key accounts through two price increases by walking each buyer through raw material costs.
  • Ran on-site packaging line reviews that found savings customers could present to their own management.
  • Coached account managers on quarterly business reviews; three moved on to larger territories.

Account Manager, Tristate Corrugated, Cincinnati, OH (05/2007 to 02/2017)

  • Managed 40 mid-size manufacturing accounts and grew the book from about $2.1M to $3.4M a year.
  • Ranked first in the region for renewal rate in four of nine years.
  • Trained new inside sales staff on quoting and sample requests.

How to make the sample yours

Write the reason for the step down into the summary

"Returning to hands-on account work" or "looking for a role without regional travel" answers the interviewer's first question before it is asked. One honest clause is enough.

Keep one management figure for context

Team size and region revenue show seniority. For an individual role, keep one of them and spend the remaining bullets on accounts you handled personally.

Hold the page to two

Nineteen years can easily run to three pages. Keep the last ten to fifteen years in detail and move the rest to the earlier experience list.

Use the posting's level of language

If the ad says "manage a book of 30 accounts", use those words. Strategy and transformation vocabulary from your director years can make the page read above the job.

Brief your references on the target role

A former customer or peer who knows you want an account role will talk about your account work rather than your leadership, which is what this hiring manager needs to hear.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • account management
  • key accounts
  • contract renewals
  • pricing negotiation
  • customer retention
  • quarterly business reviews
  • Salesforce
  • territory management
  • upselling
  • industrial packaging
  • manufacturing customers
  • relationship management

Mistakes to avoid

  • Changing past titles to look more junior. A title that does not match employment records is a bigger problem than seeming overqualified.
  • Leaving the reason for the move unsaid. Readers fill the silence with "will leave soon" or "wants my job".
  • Listing every award and committee from 19 years. Two or three tied to account work are plenty.
  • Opening with a leadership philosophy. For an individual role, the first lines should be about customers and results.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a resume when I am overqualified for the job?

Name the level you want in the summary with a short reason, lead with the hands-on skills the posting lists, keep management to one bullet per role and fold older jobs into a short list. Keep every title accurate.

Should I remove senior titles or degrees if I am overqualified?

Do not change or remove titles you held; they can be checked. You can leave off an advanced degree the job does not use, as long as an application form does not ask for your complete education.

How do I explain taking a step down in my career?

In one clause on the resume and a few sentences in the interview: what you want more of (hands-on work, fewer hours, less travel) and why this job gives it. Avoid sounding as if you are settling.

Will employers worry I want too much money?

Some will. Keep salary off the resume, research the range for the role, and if the posting asks for expectations, give a figure inside that range.

How far back should an overqualified candidate's resume go?

Ten to fifteen years in detail, as for most long careers. Older roles can become one line each or come off the page.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
