Resume template for college students
Short answer
Leslie suits a college student who already works part-time: the campus job and summer job print first, then skills and education, with a lab project, a certification and campus roles below. The fictional sample is a third-year biology student applying for a part-time lab assistant job. Replace the major, expected graduation date and jobs with your own.

Why Leslie suits a college student resume
Leslie prints work experience right after the summary, ahead of skills and education. Holding a campus job while studying full-time shows reliability that grades alone cannot, and Leslie puts that first, with a single touch of blue in the centred header.
Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta prints education directly after experience, ahead of skills; pick it if your coursework or GPA is the stronger part of your application.
What goes in each section, in Leslie's order
Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Give your year, major and what you are looking for: part-time during term, a summer job or a research position. If you work while studying, the weekly hours are worth stating.
- Work Experience. Campus jobs and summer jobs count fully, even when they have nothing to do with your major. Pick bullets that connect to the target: record keeping, safety checks, dealing with the public.
- Skills. Keep lab or technical skills apart from software. List only techniques you have done yourself in a lab course, not ones you watched demonstrated.
- Education. Write "Expected" before the graduation month, then a GPA if it helps and two or three courses with a lab or project component.
- Projects. Course projects bridge your classes and the job. Say how long the project ran, who you worked with and what you personally handled.
- Certifications. Lifeguard, first aid, CPR or a lab safety course belong here with the issuer and year. Keep them current; an expired card is better left off.
- Campus involvement. Clubs and volunteering print last. A role with responsibility (treasurer, coordinator) is worth a line; plain membership usually is not.

How to make the sample yours
State your weekly availability
Supervisors hiring students plan around class timetables. Add your available hours, or "15 to 20 hours a week", to the summary.
Describe coursework in the posting's words
If the lab posting asks for aseptic technique or gel electrophoresis, name the course where you did it. A course code like "BIO 210" means nothing outside your school.
Keep the summer job even if it is unrelated
A lifeguard or retail summer shows you can hold down a job. Two or three bullets are enough; save the detail for work closer to the role.
Swap the project for your strongest coursework
Engineering students can use a design build, business students a case competition, humanities students a research paper. Keep one result in each bullet.
Drop high school by your second year
From your second year of college, your high school, its GPA and its clubs can come off the page unless an achievement there is exceptional.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.
- laboratory techniques
- aseptic technique
- lab notebook
- Microsoft Excel
- data entry
- customer service
- time management
- CPR and first aid
- research
- part-time
- organization
- attention to detail
Mistakes to avoid
- Listing course codes instead of course names a reader outside your school will recognise.
- Leaving the graduation date off. Without "Expected" and a month, a reader cannot tell whether you can work this summer or next.
- Adding every club you joined. Membership with no role adds length, not evidence.
- Describing campus jobs in one vague line because they feel minor. Hours, duties and any trust you were given (keys, cash, closing shifts) all count.

Frequently asked questions
What should a college student put on a resume?
Your degree in progress with the expected graduation month, part-time and summer jobs, relevant course projects, skills, and one or two campus roles where you had responsibility.
Should I put high school on my college resume?
In your first year, yes, if you have little else. From the second year on, replace it with college coursework, projects and jobs.
How do I list a degree I have not finished yet?
Write the degree and major as usual and put "Expected" before the graduation month, for example "B.S. Biology, Expected 05/2028". You can leave the start date off.
Can I use the same resume for internships and part-time jobs?
Keep one master copy, then make two versions. Part-time job resumes lead with availability and reliability; internship resumes lead with projects and technical coursework.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 7 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
