Technical resume template with skills before experience
Short answer
FAANGPath is the technical template among Resumity's seven: skills come right after the summary as labelled rows, so protocols, platforms and languages are read before your jobs, then experience, projects, education and certifications. The fictional sample is a network engineer at a hospital group, with automation work, a home lab and two certifications. Despite the name, it suits any engineering or IT role.

Why FAANGPath suits a technical resume
FAANGPath is meant for technical candidates who want languages and tools read before their jobs: skills follow the summary as labelled rows with a dot after each label, then experience, projects, education and certifications. The centred black and grey layout holds nothing but text, so dense technical terms stay easy to scan.
Second choice: Meridian. Meridian uses the same order with grey rules running beside each heading and a colon after skill labels; the two are close, so choose by look.
What goes in each section, in FAANGPath's order
FAANGPath prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Name your specialty, environment and scale (campus, data center or cloud; how many sites or users), plus the one practice that sets you apart, such as automation or documentation.
- Skills. Split by what a hiring engineer looks for: protocols and disciplines under Technical, products and languages under Tools. Write the vendors and versions you actually run, not ones you met once in a course.
- Work Experience. Every bullet should carry a technical noun and an outcome: the migration, the scale, the risk avoided. Changes made without outages and hours saved by automation are results; "maintained the network" is not.
- Projects. A home lab or an open-source contribution shows you learn beyond the job. Two bullets and a link are enough, so it supports your paid work rather than competing with it.
- Education. Degree and school, briefly. Your certifications and experience say more about current skills than coursework does.
- Certifications. Full name, vendor and year. FAANGPath prints them last, so carry the most important one into the headline too, for example "Network Engineer, CCNP".
The sample resume as text
The same content as the files above, so you can copy a line or compare it with your own.

How to make the sample yours
Swap the stack for yours
A cloud engineer would list AWS or Azure services, Terraform and Kubernetes; a systems administrator, Windows Server, Active Directory and PowerShell. Keep the split between disciplines and tools.
Quantify the environment
Sites, devices, users, servers or requests per second. Scale tells a technical reader which problems you have already faced.
Carry a credential into the headline
If the ad names a certification you hold, add it after your title in the headline so it appears at the top as well as in the final section.
Link to work that can be seen
A GitHub profile with lab configs, scripts or write-ups backs up automation claims. Strip out anything containing employer data first.
Cut the acronym soup
Spell a term out once if the posting does ("Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)"), and drop acronyms no reader of the role needs.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.
- network engineering
- BGP
- OSPF
- SD-WAN
- firewall management
- Cisco
- Palo Alto Networks
- network automation
- Ansible
- Python
- wireless networking
- VLAN
- CCNP
Mistakes to avoid
- Listing every technology you have touched. A long tail of half-known tools invites interview questions you cannot answer.
- Skill ratings such as "Python: 4/5". Show the level through what you built with it.
- Bullets that describe the system but not your part ("The network had 900 switches"). Start with what you did.
- Internal IP ranges, hostnames or security details in examples or linked repositories.
How the sample PDF reads in text extractors
We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.
| Extractor | Name, email, phone | Headings | Bullets intact |
|---|---|---|---|
| pdf.js 4.10.38 | All found | 6 of 6 | 9 of 9 |
| pdftotext (Xpdf) 4.00 | All found | 6 of 6 | 9 of 9 |
| pypdf 6.13.0 | All found | 6 of 6 | 9 of 9 |
Frequently asked questions
What should a technical resume include?
A specific summary, a skills block of disciplines and tools, experience with technical outcomes, any projects or labs, then education and certifications. Skills near the top help a technical reviewer place you quickly.
Should technical skills go above or below experience?
In FAANGPath they sit above, and the order is fixed. That suits most engineers and IT staff because tools are a large part of the job. If your experience is the stronger case, Leslie prints experience before skills.
How many skills should a technical resume list?
Enough to cover what you could discuss in an interview, often ten to twenty across the rows. Cut anything you would not want to be asked about.
Do side projects belong on a technical resume?
Yes, when they show skills the job needs and you can link to them. A lab, a script library or an open-source fix all count.
Is FAANGPath only for big tech companies?
No. The name refers to large tech employers, but nothing in the layout is specific to any company. Network, systems, hardware and software engineers can all use it.
Will applicant tracking systems read this FAANGPath PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 9 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
