Job Search Statistics 2026
These are the job search numbers we could trace to a named source with a stated sample and date. Government data (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, New York Fed) sits next to data from hiring software and job-tracking apps, which measure their own users rather than everyone, so each figure says whose behaviour it describes. India-specific job search data is thin; where it exists we include it and say how it was collected.

How long does a job search take?
How long are people unemployed before finding a job in the US?
The median spell of unemployment in the US was 11.5 weeks in September 2026, up from 10.1 weeks a year earlier; the average was 24.8 weeks.
This measures how long people who are still unemployed have been looking, not how long it took successful job seekers to get hired, and the average is pulled up by very long spells. It is seasonally adjusted data from the monthly Current Population Survey.
Primary source: US Bureau of Labor Statistics, The Employment Situation, September 2026 (including Table A-12, unemployed persons by duration) (2 October 2026 (reference month September 2026)). Current Population Survey, a monthly survey of about 60,000 US households. Duration is the time people currently unemployed have been looking for work, seasonally adjusted.
How many job seekers have been looking for over six months?
1.9 million Americans had been unemployed for 27 weeks or more in September 2026, 27.1% of everyone unemployed.
The long-term unemployed share is one of the clearest signs of a slow-hiring market. The overall US unemployment rate in September 2026 was 4.2%.

How long does it take to get a job offer?
Among Huntr users who recorded an offer, the median time from the first saved job to the first offer was 82 days in April to June 2026, down from a record 108 days in January to March.
It counts only searches that reached a recorded offer, so searches still running are excluded and the true wait is longer. Huntr is a job-tracking and resume app; about 60% of its jobs with a known country are in North America.
Vendor survey: Huntr, The Q2 2026 Job Search Trends Report (12 August 2026 (data pulled 7 August 2026)). Platform data from Huntr's job tracker: 179,363 saved jobs, 102,777 applications and 5,388 users in April-June 2026, plus a 601,815-application trailing 12-month window. Outcomes are user-recorded. 60% of jobs with a known country are in North America. Huntr sells resume and job-search tools.
How long after applying do you hear about an interview?
Huntr users waited a median of 6 days from application to interview and 10 days from interview to offer in April to June 2026.
The median from the start of a search to the first interview fell from 29 days in the first quarter to 23 days. These are medians among applications where the user logged the outcome.

How confident are job seekers about getting an offer?
Americans put their chance of receiving at least one job offer in the next four months at 18.0% on average in July 2026, the lowest reading since March 2021.
The fall was largest for people without a college degree, those under 45, and women. In the same survey, 24.9% of respondents said they had searched for a job in the past four weeks, up from 22.5% in March 2026.
Primary source: Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Center for Microeconomic Data, SCE Labor Market Survey, July 2026 (July 2026 survey). Module of the Survey of Consumer Expectations, a nationally representative internet survey of a rotating panel of about 1,300 US household heads, fielded every four months.
How likely do workers think they are to find a new job if they lost theirs?
US workers put their chance of finding a new job, if they lost their current one, at 46.1% on average in September 2026.
That was up 0.7 points on the month and above the 12-month average of 45.5%. The measure hit a series low of 43.1% in December 2025, according to the New York Fed's January 2026 release.

How many applications does it take to get a job?
How many applications does it take to get a job offer?
Of 1,554 Huntr users who got a first offer between July 2025 and June 2026 after at least 11 applications, 61.2% needed 50 or fewer and 16.7% needed more than 100.
26% got there in 11 to 20 applications and 22% needed 51 to 100. It excludes people who got an offer in under 11 logged applications and everyone who has not had an offer yet, so it is not a typical-search figure.
Vendor survey: Huntr, The Q2 2026 Job Search Trends Report (12 August 2026 (data pulled 7 August 2026)). Platform data from Huntr's job tracker: 179,363 saved jobs, 102,777 applications and 5,388 users in April-June 2026, plus a 601,815-application trailing 12-month window. Outcomes are user-recorded. 60% of jobs with a known country are in North America. Huntr sells resume and job-search tools.
Does sending more applications get more interviews?
Huntr users who sent 11 to 20 applications in April to June 2026 got an interview on 8.12% of them, against 2.86% for users who sent 100 or more.
Huntr says the gap does not show the effect of sending fewer applications: high-volume senders may differ in field, seniority or targeting. Applying eight or more times at one company was linked to a 1.85% per-application interview rate, against 6.14% for a single application.
Vendor survey: Huntr, The Q2 2026 Job Search Trends Report (12 August 2026 (data pulled 7 August 2026)). Jobs on Greenhouse drew 244 applications each on average in 2025, more than double the 116 in 2022.
Based on data from over 6,000 companies and 640 million applications from 2022 to 2025. It covers Greenhouse customers only, and an average is pulled up by a few very popular roles.

What share of cold applications lead to an offer?
On Ashby, the offer rate for inbound (cold) applications fell from about 7 in 1,000 to 2 in 1,000 between 2021 and 2024.
Ashby linked the fall to inbound application volume tripling over the period. Inbound still supplies about 94% of applications and the largest share of hires. Data covers 38 million applications to 93,000 jobs at Ashby customers only.
Vendor survey: Ashby, Are referred candidates more likely to get hired? (16 May 2025 (data 2021-2024)). Platform data: over 38 million applications across 93,000 jobs at Ashby customers, January 2021 to December 2024, by source of application. Ashby sells recruiting software.
Are there more applicants per job in India now?
LinkedIn said in January 2026 that applicants per open role in India have more than doubled since early 2022.
LinkedIn did not publish the underlying counts in the coverage we could read, and the figure covers jobs posted on LinkedIn only. Reported by PTI via Careers360; LinkedIn's own release was not reachable.

Do referrals and applying direct work better?
Are referred candidates more likely to get an interview?
40% of referred candidates on Ashby moved from application to interview between 2021 and 2024, and 16% of those interviewed got an offer.
Internal candidates did slightly better (42% interviewed, 32% of those got an offer). Ashby did not publish the inbound interview rate in this report, only that it was lower.
Is it better to apply on the company website or a job board?
Applications sent through an employer's own careers site were marked interviewed 6.42% of the time on Huntr in April to June 2026, against 3.82% through job boards.
Applications through an ATS domain such as Workday ran at 5.29%. Huntr calls these descriptive rates, not route effects: people may apply direct only to jobs they fit well. Applications sourced from Google had a 7.91% rate, 2.4 times LinkedIn's 3.36%.

How long do employers take to hire?
What is the average time to hire?
US employers' median time to fill was about a month and a half in 2025: 44 days for non-executive roles and 45 days for executive roles.
Time to fill runs from the requisition opening to the offer being accepted, in calendar days. Extra-large organisations took 61 days for non-executive roles. Executive time to fill fell from 60 days in 2022.
Primary source: SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management), 2025 Recruiting Benchmarking Report (2025 (fieldwork January-March 2025)). Unweighted; medians reported; per-metric samples vary.
Is hiring getting slower?
Average time to fill on Greenhouse rose to 59.67 days in 2025 from 43.64 days in 2022, a 37% increase.
Over the same years, recruiters per organisation fell from 10.43 to 4.62 and monthly hires per recruiter rose from 2.2 to 4.9. Platform data from over 6,000 companies; Greenhouse sells recruiting software.

How fast are US employers hiring?
US employers made 5.2 million hires in August 2026, a hires rate of 3.3%, while 7.1 million jobs were open.
Openings are a count on the last business day of the month and hires are a count over the whole month, so the two cannot be subtracted to get unfilled jobs. The quits rate was 1.9%, which means few people are leaving jobs and freeing up roles.
Primary source: US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), August 2026 (29 September 2026 (reference month August 2026)). Monthly establishment survey of US employers; job openings measured on the last business day of the month, hires and quits over the month. Seasonally adjusted.
How common are ghosting and ghost jobs?
How many job seekers get ghosted by employers?
55% of 1,000 US job seekers surveyed in March 2026 named being ghosted after applying as their top frustration with hiring.
This is a 'top frustration' share, not a measured ghosting rate. Not hearing back from employers was also the second-biggest cause of poor mental health (46%), after rejections (47%). Resume Genius sells resume-building software.
Vendor survey: Resume Genius, Job Seeker Insights Report 2026 (8 April 2026 (fieldwork from 16 March 2026)). Pollfish online survey of 1,000 US adults screened as actively job searching (employed, self-employed and unemployed), launched 16 March 2026. Resume Genius sells resume-building software.

28% moved to the next round and 13% were formally rejected. US sample of 1,200 job seekers within a 2,950-person survey across five countries.
Vendor survey: Greenhouse Software, 63% of Job Seekers Have Faced an AI Interview. Most Haven’t Had a Good One Yet (2026 Candidate AI Interview Report) (1 May 2026). Survey of 2,950 active job seekers in the US, UK, Germany, Australia and Ireland; figures quoted are for the 1,200 US respondents unless noted.
How many job postings never lead to a hire?
18% of jobs opened by Ashby customers in 2024 closed without a hire, while 82% were filled.
Of the unfilled jobs, 5.5% of all jobs were paused, 1% had an offer that was not accepted, and 3.5% gave no reason. 97.5% of jobs at companies with 50+ staff moved at least some candidates to interview, so an unfilled job is not the same as a fake one. Based on 22,000 jobs from 2021 to 2024.
Vendor survey: Ashby, How common are ghost jobs? (8 April 2025 (data 2021-2024)). Platform data: over 22,000 jobs at Ashby customers, January 2021 to December 2024, classified by how the job closed (filled, not filled, paused, offer without hire, no reason).
How many job ads are old or stale?
In September 2026, 34% of 96,902 Indeed job ads in the US and UK had been up for more than 30 days, rising to 43% in technology.
The share was 36% in the US and 27% in the UK. An old ad is a warning sign, not proof of a ghost job, since some roles take longer to fill; exact reposts were only 0.1% of listings. Kickresume sells resume software.
Vendor survey: Kickresume, Are You Applying to a Ghost Job? 34% of Ads Are 30+ Days Old (7 October 2026). Scrape of 96,902 Indeed job ads (77,681 US, 19,221 UK) in six industry searches, 14-18 September 2026, checked for age over 30 days, exact reposts and "urgent hiring" without a closing date. Kickresume sells resume software.
How many job seekers have seen fake job postings?
69% of 1,200 US job seekers in a Greenhouse survey published in November 2025 said they had encountered fake job postings, and 49% said they were sending more applications than a year earlier.
'Fake' was the respondent's judgement, so this measures perception rather than a verified count. A separate Resume Genius survey in March 2026 found 67% had suspected a posting was fake or misleading.
Vendor survey: Greenhouse Software, Greenhouse 2025 AI in Hiring Report (press release: An AI Trust Crisis) (19 November 2025). Survey of over 4,100 job seekers, recruiters and hiring managers in the US, UK, Ireland and Germany; job-seeker figures quoted are for 1,200 US job seekers.

93% of 1,161 Indian employees and job seekers surveyed by Indeed said they had come across suspicious or fraudulent job opportunities.
51% were not confident they could tell a genuine recruiter from a scammer, 31% said scams had made them trust recruiters less, and 3% reported losing money. Reported by Business Today in July 2026; Indeed's sampling method was not published in the coverage.
Reported by a secondary source: Business Today (reporting an Indeed India survey), More than 9 in 10 job seekers encounter fake job offers (9 July 2026). Secondary report of an Indeed survey of 1,161 employees and job seekers in India (sample size from other coverage of the same survey). Sampling method and fieldwork dates not published.
Which popular numbers have no real source?
"Around half of all job postings are ghost jobs."
No dataset shows that; the best measured figure is about 1 in 5 jobs closing without a hire.
Figures like 1 in 3 or 47% circulate on blogs without a primary dataset, or come from subtracting monthly hires from open jobs, which are different kinds of count. Ashby's ATS data found 18% of 2024 jobs closed unfilled, and most of those still interviewed candidates, so many were paused or cancelled roles rather than fake ones. (Ashby)
"You need to send 200 or more applications to get a job."
True for a minority; most recorded offers came within 50.
Among 1,554 Huntr users who logged at least 11 applications before a first offer, 61.2% needed 50 or fewer and 16.7% needed more than 100. Users who sent fewer applications also had higher interview rates per application. (Huntr)
"Most jobs are filled through referrals."
Not in ATS data: referrals were about 18% of hires.
Referrals do convert far better per candidate (about 1% of applications, about 18% of hires at Ashby customers), but inbound applications still produced 43% to 52% of hires from 2021 to 2025. (Ashby)
