Resume template for Belgium: how to set out a Belgian CV

Short answer

Henrietta follows the order VDAB, the Flemish employment service, gives for a CV: a short "about me", work experience, studies, then skills, with languages in their own group. Belgium's EURES page advises leaving out a photo and private details such as age or nationality unless asked, which suits a template that prints no photo. The fictional sample is an export logistics coordinator in Antwerp working in three languages.

Why Henrietta suits a Belgium resume

Henrietta prints the summary, then work experience, then education, then skills, the same sequence as the numbered sections in VDAB's CV guide (about me, work experience, studies, skills). Its black and grey business look in plain Inter type fits VDAB's advice to use a clear, businesslike font with subheadings, bullet points and white space.

Second choice: Leslie. Leslie also puts experience first but prints skills before education; choose it if your languages and systems matter more than your diploma.

What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order

Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. VDAB calls this "Over mezelf" (about me) and places it between your contact details and your work experience. Three sentences: what you do, in which sector and in which languages, with the area you want to work in last.
  2. Work Experience. Start with your latest job, as VDAB advises, and give the employer and period for each. For logistics, name trade lanes, cargo types and weekly volumes, the details a forwarding manager checks first.
  3. Education. VDAB asks for the name of the programme, the institution and the period. A relevant programme you did not finish can still go here, as long as you note that no diploma was obtained.
  4. Skills. EURES asks for language skills in a separate section with CEFR levels, and notes French matters in Wallonia and Brussels, Dutch in Flanders and Brussels, and German in the German-speaking Community. With three skill groups, Henrietta gives languages a column of their own.

How to make the sample yours

Leave the photo out unless requested

Belgium's EURES page advises no photo unless the job requires it or the employer asks, and VDAB says to add one if the employer asks or you want to. Resumity templates print none; if a vacancy asks for a photo, add it to the DOCX in Word.

Decide on your date of birth

VDAB lists date of birth with name, place of residence, phone and email, while EURES says that to prevent discrimination no private details such as age, nationality or marital status need be given. The sample leaves the date out and gives only the town.

Lead with your strongest asset

VDAB suggests putting your biggest asset (experience, education or skills) first under your contact details. Resumity templates fix the order, so if skills are your strongest card, switch to Meridian, which prints them above experience.

Keep to one or two pages

VDAB advises fitting everything on 1 to 2 pages and recommends a businesslike font such as Arial or Verdana; Henrietta's Inter is a similarly plain sans-serif.

Write a new letter for each vacancy

EURES advises a separate cover letter for each application, tailored to the company and the job. For an unsolicited application, it suggests stating your career goals and why you chose that company.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Adding age, nationality or marital status out of habit; Belgium's EURES page says no such private details need be given.
  • Hiding languages inside a paragraph. EURES asks for them in a separate section, with a CEFR level for each.
  • A decorative font or dense blocks of text; VDAB recommends a businesslike font, subheadings, bullet points and white space.
  • One covering letter for every vacancy, when EURES advises tailoring each to the company and the job.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put a photo on a Belgian CV?

Not by default. Belgium's EURES page advises no photo unless the job requires it or the employer asks, and VDAB says to add one if the employer asks or you want to. Resumity templates print no photo.

How do I show languages on a Belgian CV?

In a section of their own, with a CEFR level for each, as EURES advises. It notes that French is important in Wallonia and Brussels, Dutch in Flanders and Brussels, and German in the German-speaking Community.

How long should a CV be in Belgium?

VDAB advises fitting everything on 1 to 2 pages, with subheadings, bullet points and white space so it reads quickly.

Do I include my date of birth?

It is up to you. VDAB's Flemish guide lists date of birth among personal details, while Belgium's EURES page says private details such as age need not be given. The sample leaves it out.

Can I list a degree I did not finish?

Yes, if it adds value for the vacancy. VDAB says to list the programme and note that you did not obtain the diploma.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
