Resume template for Austria: writing an Austrian Lebenslauf

Short answer

Catalyst suits an Austrian Lebenslauf for an experienced technician: it skips the summary and opens on the latest job, then skills, education and further training, on the one to two A4 pages AMS recommends. A photo is customary in Austria, but no employer may insist on one; the template prints none, so add it in Word if you want it. The fictional sample is an automation technician from Linz.

Why Catalyst suits an Austria resume

Catalyst prints no summary and starts straight with work experience, so the commissioning jobs that carry a technician's application sit right under the name, newest first, as AMS asks. Its large left-aligned name and teal headings keep a dense technical page easy to scan.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta adds a summary and prints education straight after the jobs; pick it if an apprenticeship or Werkmeister qualification is your main argument.

Catalyst template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Catalyst's order

Catalyst prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Work Experience. AMS says the most recent job comes first and the list runs backwards from there. For each role give the plant, the equipment and one measurable result; line sizes and handover dates are what a technical manager compares.
  2. Skills. AMS asks for language skills on the CEFR scale (A1 to C2), so give German and English as levels rather than adjectives. Name control systems and software the way job advertisements spell them.
  3. Education. AMS suggests listing the education and training relevant to the job; after vocational training, the school-leaving qualification with school and date is enough. The apprenticeship and the Werkmeister qualification belong here.
  4. Further training. EURES counts evidence of relevant courses as part of a complete Austrian application, so list short courses with their length and year, and keep the attendance certificates ready to attach.

How to make the sample yours

Translate it into German before applying

EURES says application documents in Austria should be written in German unless the advertisement asks for another language. The English sample shows the structure; write the German version yourself and keep the dates and figures identical.

Decide on the photo, then add it in Word

AMS calls a photo customary in German-speaking countries but not mandatory, and says that under the Equal Treatment Act no employer may insist on one; EURES still lists an application photo in a complete pack. Resumity templates have no photo area, so add one to the DOCX in Word.

Choose how much personal data to give

AMS says date and place of birth, marital status and nationality can be included but do not have to be, and that marital status and children must not disadvantage you. Resumity's header has no field for them; add a line in Word if you want them.

Sign and date it if the letter is unsigned

AMS advises adding place, date and signature to the CV when they are not already on the cover letter; otherwise it is not necessary. Resumity prints no signature, so add it in Word.

Assemble the complete application pack

EURES lists copies of references, copies of qualifications (degrees and professionally relevant certificates), evidence of relevant courses and an application photo as a complete pack. It adds that applications are almost always sent by email or online, often through forms.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Sensitive data such as religion, political views or union membership, which AMS says should never appear on a CV.
  • A physical description of yourself or a salary expectation; AMS advises leaving both out.
  • Hobbies with no value for the employer, which AMS suggests leaving off.
  • Language skills written only as "good" or "basic" when AMS asks for CEFR levels.

Frequently asked questions

Is a photo required on an Austrian CV?

No. AMS says a photo is customary in German-speaking countries but not mandatory, and under the Equal Treatment Act no employer may insist on one. EURES still lists an application photo in a complete pack. Resumity templates print no photo; add one in Word if you choose to.

How long should a Lebenslauf be in Austria?

One to two A4 pages, says AMS. EURES suggests no more than two, and one is even better.

Do I have to give my date of birth and marital status?

No. AMS says date and place of birth, marital status and nationality can be included but do not have to be; how much you disclose is your own decision.

Should I sign my CV?

AMS suggests adding place, date and signature to the CV if they are not already on the cover letter; otherwise it is not necessary. Resumity prints no signature, so add it in Word.

Is the Europass CV used in Austria?

EURES says the Europass CV is required by many companies in Austria. If a posting asks for it, use the Europass format; otherwise a reverse-chronological CV like the sample follows the AMS advice.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Catalyst PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
