CV template for Mexico (currículum vitae format)

Short answer

Leslie suits a Mexican currículum for an experienced professional: a short profile, then jobs newest first, ahead of skills, education and courses. The Labour Ministry's Observatorio Laboral advises a title that describes you, no marital status or nationality, and only your latest degree; Tec de Monterrey's career centre suggests about one page per ten years of work. The fictional sample is a demand planning analyst at an appliance maker near Monterrey.

Why Leslie suits a Mexico resume

Leslie prints work experience straight after the profile and before skills, so a plant manager reads the forecasting results first. Its centred blue header and short blue underlines are the only colour on the page, in line with the Observatorio Laboral's advice to prefer black and use any colour with restraint.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian uses no colour at all and prints labelled skill rows above the jobs, for adverts that lead with SAP or Power BI.

What goes in each section, in Leslie's order

Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. The Observatorio Laboral calls this the objetivo profesional: who you are, what you know how to do and how you would apply it, aimed at the vacancy. Three sentences are enough; end on the role you want.
  2. Work Experience. The Observatorio orders each job as position, company, period, a brief description of duties and the achievements. Tec de Monterrey's advisers add percentages and indicators of improvement, which is why every bullet in the sample carries a result.
  3. Skills. Tec de Monterrey suggests matching at least three keywords from the advert to your competencies. The Observatorio closes its model with languages and a level (basic, intermediate or advanced); the sample adds the CEFR level next to English.
  4. Education. The Observatorio asks for your latest degree only, or a technical baccalaureate if it relates to your career, and to leave out your grade average unless you are presenting yourself as an outstanding student. Tec de Monterrey agrees the average is not a must.
  5. Courses and diplomados. Cursos y diplomados get their own heading in the Observatorio's model, as long as they relate to the job. Give the institution, the hours and the year, as the sample does.

How to make the sample yours

Photo: the two sources disagree

The Observatorio Laboral recommends leaving the photo off: it is not relevant to the employer, takes space and can invite discrimination. Tec de Monterrey's career centre suggests having a good professional photo you can add, especially for sales or marketing. Resumity templates print none; insert one in Word in the DOCX if you choose to.

Drop marital status and nationality

The Observatorio says name, phone and email are the basics and to avoid marital status or nationality. It also asks for an email address made of your first name and surname.

Address only if it helps

Tec de Monterrey's coordinator notes that an address is common but optional, and that you can leave it off when it does not help you for that vacancy. The sample gives the city only.

About one page per decade

Tec de Monterrey advises sticking to one page, counting roughly one page per ten years of experience. The Observatorio adds that a CV running past one sheet deserves another look to cut irrelevant detail.

Write the Spanish version in the first person

For Spanish-language adverts, the Observatorio recommends action verbs in the first person singular: impulsé, mejoré, resolví, logré. The sample is in English for a plant that reports to a US parent company.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Heading the page "Curriculum Vitae", which the Observatorio says looks unprofessional; use a title that describes you.
  • Listing marital status or nationality, which the Observatorio advises leaving out.
  • Describing yourself as "proactivo" or "orientado a resultados" instead of showing actions and results.
  • Listing every school back to secundaria when the Observatorio asks only for your latest degree.
  • An informal email address; the Observatorio asks for one built from your name and surname.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a CV be in Mexico?

Tec de Monterrey's career centre advises one page, counting roughly one page per ten years of experience. The Observatorio Laboral suggests rereading any CV that runs past one sheet to remove what the job does not need.

Should I put a photo on a Mexican CV?

Advice is split. The Observatorio Laboral recommends against it, partly because a photo can invite discrimination; Tec de Monterrey suggests a professional photo can help in sales and marketing. Resumity templates print none, so add it in Word if you decide to.

Should I include marital status or nationality?

The Observatorio Laboral says to avoid both and keep personal data to your name, phone and email. Tec de Monterrey adds that your address is optional.

Does servicio social count as work experience?

Yes. The Observatorio counts servicio social and prácticas profesionales as your first work experience and lists them with the position, organisation, dates and achievements. Tec de Monterrey also encourages including them.

Should I put my grade average (promedio) on my CV?

Only if it helps. The Observatorio says to leave it out unless you are presenting yourself as an outstanding student, and Tec de Monterrey calls it a plus but not a must, noting that recruiters then look for your extracurricular activities.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
