Resume template for Norway and the Norwegian CV

Short answer

Olivia suits a Norwegian CV in communications, marketing or other work judged partly on presentation: its blue header band carries the contact details, and the body runs profile, skills, jobs newest first, then education, within two pages. NTNU and the national education portal utdanning.no both treat a photo as optional. The fictional sample is a communications adviser at a Bergen energy company.

Why Olivia suits a Norway resume

Olivia sets the name and contact line in white on a full-width blue band, then prints skills before experience, so a communications adviser's media, crisis and writing skills are read early. When the CV itself is a sample of how you present information, its bolder look works in your favour on screen.

Second choice: Leslie. Leslie keeps a single touch of blue in a centred header and prints experience ahead of skills, for applicants whose job titles say more than their skill list.

Olivia template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Olivia's order

Olivia prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Four lines: field, years, one result with a number and the kind of role you want next. NTNU advises writing the CV in the same language as the job advertisement, so a Norwegian-language posting gets a Norwegian profile, and the rest of the CV follows.
  2. Skills. Communication methods first, software after them. For Norwegian, say whether you write Bokmål, Nynorsk or both, as the sample does; for other languages a plain level such as "fluent" or "reads fluently" is enough.
  3. Work Experience. Most recent job first: NTNU and utdanning.no both tell you to start with the newest experience and work backwards. Give each role three or four bullets that name an audience, a channel and an outcome.
  4. Education. NTNU lists degree, institution, graduation date (or expected date) and specialisation. Students often lead with education, NTNU notes; Olivia prints it after the jobs, which suits someone with several years of work, like the sample.

How to make the sample yours

Use the language of the advertisement

NTNU's career service advises writing the CV in the language the job ad uses. The sample is in English because its fictional employer advertised in English; for a Norwegian posting, translate the profile, bullets and skills yourself.

Choose whether to add a photo or birth date

NTNU says some applicants in Norway include a date of birth and a photo, but both are optional; utdanning.no also calls the photo voluntary. Resumity templates print neither, so add them to the DOCX in Word only if you decide you want them.

Leave references off unless asked

Utdanning.no says references do not need to be on the CV unless the posting asks for them, and NTNU notes they are generally provided on request. Line up two names before you reach the interview stage.

Keep a one-page version for career fairs

NTNU keeps the full CV within two pages and suggests a one-page version for fairs. Make it by cutting the oldest role to two bullets and dropping the bachelor's degree.

Give a location and a LinkedIn link

NTNU says a postal address or simply your location will do, plus an up-to-date LinkedIn profile. The sample shows Bergen and a LinkedIn address in the header band.

Mistakes to avoid

  • An English CV for a posting written in Norwegian. NTNU's advice is to match the language of the advertisement.
  • Running past two pages, the maximum both NTNU and utdanning.no give.
  • Printing referees and their phone numbers when the advertisement has not asked for them.
  • A holiday snapshot as the photo, if you add one at all; NTNU asks that it looks professional.

We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a Norwegian CV be?

Two pages at most, according to both NTNU and utdanning.no. NTNU also suggests a one-page version to hand out at career fairs.

Is a photo expected on a CV in Norway?

It is optional. NTNU says some applicants include a photo and date of birth but neither is required, and utdanning.no calls the photo voluntary. Resumity templates print no photo, so add one in Word if you want it.

Should I write my CV in Norwegian or English?

Use the language of the job advertisement, as NTNU's career service advises. An English posting at an international company can take an English CV; a Norwegian posting should get a Norwegian one.

Do I need to include references?

Not on the CV itself unless the advertisement asks, says utdanning.no. NTNU adds that writing "References are available upon request" has become more common; bring the list to the interview.

Should I put my date of birth on the CV?

You can. Utdanning.no lists date of birth among personal details, and NTNU describes it as optional. The sample leaves it out.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Olivia PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
