Resume template for Finland, following Finnish CV practice

Short answer

Meridian suits a Finnish CV: profile, skills with graded language levels, work and education newest first, then a references list, which the Universities of Helsinki and Turku both suggest including. InfoFinland puts the usual length at 1 to 2 pages and leaves the photo to you. The fictional sample is an environmental specialist at a Tampere water utility who works in Finnish, Swedish and English.

Why Meridian suits a Finland resume

Meridian prints skills right under the profile in labelled rows, so the Languages row with Finnish, Swedish and English levels is near the top, where a Finnish employer checks it. The extra list prints last, which is the natural place for the referees the University of Helsinki asks you to name. No colour, so it prints cleanly at any office.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta prints education straight after experience, which helps a recent graduate whose major and minor subjects are the main selling point.

Meridian template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. A few lines on your field, the work you do most and the languages you work in. The University of Helsinki asks you to put the information most relevant to the job early, so the role you want closes the paragraph.
  2. Skills. The University of Helsinki says language skills should be listed by level and accepts CEFR levels (A1 to C2); Turku's career service suggests excellent, good, satisfactory or basic, and reminds you to include Finnish if you have any. The sample gives both a word and a CEFR level.
  3. Work Experience. InfoFinland asks for work experience in reverse chronological order. Turku's career service wants job title, employer and dates as month and year, the MM/YYYY format the sample prints.
  4. Education. Turku's career service asks for the institution, the dates and your main subject, plus minor subjects. The sample fits major and minor into one detail line under the degree.
  5. References. Here Finnish practice differs: the University of Helsinki says to mention one to three referees and their contact details on the CV, and Turku suggests former supervisors or team leaders. Ask each person first; InfoFinland notes an interviewer cannot contact them without your consent.

How to make the sample yours

Put a date on the CV

The University of Helsinki asks for a date on the CV to show the document is current. Resumity templates have no date line, so add one such as "CV updated 10/2026" under your contact details in the DOCX, in Word.

Photo: follow the advertisement

InfoFinland says you can include a photograph but should follow what the job advertisement says, and notes that in anonymous recruitment the employer wants no picture. The University of Helsinki leaves it to you. These templates print none; add one in Word when it helps.

Learning Finnish? Show the courses

InfoFinland suggests listing completed Finnish language courses under a separate heading. If you are adapting this sample as a newcomer, give the courses their own list and state your current level in the Languages row.

Add the cards the job needs

InfoFinland lists completed passports and cards, such as a hygiene passport, among the other competence a CV shows. Put any your target job asks for in the skills or certifications, where a recruiter can find them quickly.

Match the advertisement's language

InfoFinland says applications are usually written in the language the job advertisement was published in. The sample is in English for an English-language posting; a Finnish posting needs a Finnish CV.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Naming referees without asking them first. InfoFinland reminds applicants to get permission, and the employer cannot contact them without your consent.
  • Vague language levels such as "some Swedish". Use excellent, good, satisfactory or basic, or a CEFR level.
  • Sending copies of employment certificates with the first application; InfoFinland says there is usually no need to send them in advance.
  • Adding a photo when the posting says recruitment is anonymous.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a CV be in Finland?

InfoFinland says a CV is usually 1 to 2 pages long, and the University of Helsinki gives two pages as the recommended maximum. Turku's career service sets two A4 pages as the general limit for a young applicant.

Should a Finnish CV include references?

Often, yes. The University of Helsinki says to mention one to three referees with contact details, and Turku's career service suggests former supervisors or team leaders. Check with each person before you list them.

Do I need a photo on a Finnish CV?

No. InfoFinland and the University of Helsinki both leave it to the applicant, and some employers recruit anonymously and want no picture at all. Resumity templates print no photo.

How should I describe my language skills?

By level. The University of Helsinki accepts CEFR levels from A1 to C2, and Turku suggests excellent, good, satisfactory or basic. Include Finnish and Swedish if you have any, even at a basic level.

Do I write the CV in Finnish or English?

InfoFinland says applications are usually written in the language the job advertisement was published in, so an English-language posting can take an English CV.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
