Resume template for MBA graduates

Short answer

Henrietta is the closest Resumity layout to a business school resume: leave the summary out and it prints experience, then education, then skills, ending with a short additional information list. The fictional sample earned an MBA in an evening program while working in parcel operations and now applies for strategy roles. If your school requires its own format for campus recruiting, use that there.

Why Henrietta suits an MBA resume

Henrietta is a conventional black and grey business layout that prints education straight after experience, so the MBA sits right under the jobs it built on. With the summary left empty, the page has the three blocks business school formats use (experience, education, additional information), though Resumity always prints experience first.

Second choice: Catalyst. Catalyst also opens on experience with no summary; it suits an MBA holder several years out whose current role matters far more than the degree.

What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order

Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Work Experience. With no summary above it, your current job is the opening of the page, so its title and the scale you manage need to be clear in the first line. Each bullet starts with an action verb and ends with a business result: money, time or volume.
  2. Education. The MBA first, with concentrations and the year, then the undergraduate degree. Name the format (evening, weekend, executive) when it explains overlapping dates, and add one practicum or case competition if it relates to the target role.
  3. Skills. Keep this short; MBA readers judge you on results. Henrietta shows skills in a grid without labels, so analytical methods go in the first group and software in the second.
  4. Additional information. An "Additional information" list closes the page: languages, a certification, community roles and one or two specific interests that could start a conversation in an interview.

How to make the sample yours

Use your school's format for campus recruiting

Some business schools set a required resume format, with education first, for their recruiting platform and resume books; the Smith School's guidelines, for example, require career advisor approval. Resumity templates print experience first, so keep this layout for direct applications.

Write a headline instead of a summary

The line under your name does the introducing: target function plus "MBA". Keep it to one line, as the sample does.

End each bullet with the decision your work led to

A second shift approved, a carrier contract renegotiated, a capital request funded. Keep the analysis in the middle of the bullet and the outcome at the end.

Full-time MBA? Add the summer internship

List it as its own job above your pre-MBA roles, with the internship title and one result from your summer project.

Decide on the GMAT and GPA

Add them to the MBA detail line only when an employer asks or when they are a clear strength. They do not belong in skills.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • MBA
  • operations strategy
  • capacity planning
  • business case
  • financial modeling
  • process improvement
  • stakeholder management
  • cost reduction
  • cross-functional leadership
  • carrier negotiation
  • SQL
  • Tableau
  • Lean Six Sigma

Mistakes to avoid

  • Opening with a paragraph about your leadership philosophy. A headline and a strong first bullet do more for an MBA reader.
  • Listing core courses. Every program teaches finance and marketing; a concentration or practicum tells the reader something.
  • Leaving out the program format when dates overlap. "Evening program" explains why the MBA and a full-time job share the same years.
  • Including Microsoft Office in skills. At this level it is assumed.

Frequently asked questions

Where does an MBA go on a resume?

In education, above your undergraduate degree, with concentrations and the year. Repeat "MBA" in the headline so it shows next to your name. Henrietta prints education directly after experience.

Should an MBA resume have a summary?

The business school format the sample follows has none, so the sample leaves it out. If you are changing industries, a two-line summary can explain the move.

How long should an MBA resume be?

One page for most graduates; the Smith School's guidelines, for example, set one page for students with under eight years of experience and require one page for resume books. With more experience, ask your career advisor.

Should I put my GMAT score on my resume?

Only if an employer asks for it or the score is a clear strength. Put it in the MBA entry's detail line.

How do I list an MBA earned while working full-time?

Name the program format (evening, weekend or executive) in the education entry and keep your job dates as they are. The overlap shows you did both.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 9 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
