Embedded systems engineer resume template

Short answer

Meridian suits an embedded engineer: it prints labelled skill rows above the jobs, so the microcontroller family, RTOS and buses are read first, and it places a hardware project before education. The fictional sample writes C firmware on ARM Cortex-M for battery-powered sensors in Bengaluru, with a fourfold drop in average current, a signed over-the-air bootloader, board bring-up on the bench and host-side unit tests.

Why Meridian suits an embedded systems engineer resume

Meridian lists skills in labelled rows (Technical, Tools, Soft Skills) above work experience, so chip family, RTOS, buses and lab equipment sit near the top, and embedded postings are usually filtered on exactly those names. It prints projects ahead of education and uses no colour, so a board you built at home is read early and the page photocopies cleanly for an interview panel.

Second choice: FAANGPath. FAANGPath has an identical section order, with rules under the headings instead of beside them and a dot after each skill label; it comes down to which look you prefer.

Meridian template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Lead with the silicon and the product: "C firmware on ARM Cortex-M for battery-powered sensors" tells a hiring manager more than "embedded professional". Then say how close to the hardware you work, from board bring-up to bootloaders to application code.
  2. Skills. Technical should name the core (Cortex-M4, RISC-V), the RTOS or bare metal, and the buses you have written drivers for. Tools covers toolchains, debug probes and bench instruments; an oscilloscope and a logic analyser belong on the page because they show you can find faults a debugger cannot.
  3. Work Experience. Embedded results come with units: microamps, kilobytes of flash, interrupt latency, boot time, field failure rates. Pair each with the method, such as a power analyser trace or a hardware-in-the-loop rig, and include one bug you traced to the hardware together with the electrical team.
  4. Projects. Meridian prints projects before education, so a published hardware project gets read. Link the schematics and firmware, state the MCU and RTOS, and give one measured result such as battery life or radio range.
  5. Education. Degree, branch and year: electronics, electrical, computer engineering or computer science. Freshers can describe a final-year project as a project entry; after a few years, the degree needs one line.

Ananya Kulkarni

Embedded Systems Engineer, ARM Cortex-M Firmware

Bengaluru, India | ananya.kulkarni@example.com | +91 80 555 0162 | github.com/sample-ananya-kulkarni | linkedin.com/in/sample-ananya-kulkarni

Embedded engineer with eight years writing C firmware for battery-powered sensors and motor controllers on ARM Cortex-M. Brings up new boards with the hardware team, writes drivers and bootloaders, and tests on the host as well as on the target.

Experience

Senior Embedded Engineer, Veltrix Sensing, Bengaluru, India (04/2021 to Present)

  • Wrote the firmware for a vibration sensor node on an STM32L4 running FreeRTOS; average current fell from 180 to 45 microamps, stretching battery life from about one year to three.
  • Built a dual-bank bootloader with signed over-the-air updates over BLE; field units update without a site visit and roll back automatically if an image fails.
  • Brought up two board revisions with the hardware team using an oscilloscope, a logic analyser and SWD debugging, and traced an I2C lock-up to a missing pull-up resistor.
  • Introduced host-side unit tests with Unity and CMock in CI plus a MISRA C static analysis step; new driver code now merges with tests.

Embedded Software Engineer, Kaveri Motion Controls, Pune, India (07/2018 to 03/2021)

  • Wrote SPI and CAN drivers in bare-metal C for a motor drive controller on a Cortex-M4.
  • Moved the speed loop into a timer interrupt with fixed-point maths, reducing control jitter enough for the drive to pass the customer acceptance test.
  • Built a Python test harness that drives the board over UART for overnight regression runs.

Projects

Open-hardware weather station: A solar-powered weather station on an nRF52840 running Zephyr RTOS, with schematics and firmware published on GitHub.

  • Has run through a full monsoon season on a 2 W panel and a single Li-ion cell, reporting every ten minutes over BLE.

Education

Bachelor of Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Deccan Institute of Technology (06/2018)

Skills

C (C99, C11), Embedded C++, ARM Cortex-M, FreeRTOS, Zephyr RTOS, I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, Bluetooth Low Energy, Low-power design, GCC ARM toolchain, STM32CubeIDE, SEGGER J-Link, Oscilloscope, Logic analyser, Unity and CMock, Git, Board bring-up with hardware engineers, Design reviews

How to make the sample yours

Swap in your chip family and RTOS

STM32, NXP i.MX RT, ESP32, nRF52 or a TI part; FreeRTOS, Zephyr, ThreadX or bare metal. Change the headline, skills and bullets together so they agree, and keep vendor IDEs to the ones you have shipped with.

Give power and memory figures with units

The sample drops average current from 180 to 45 microamps. Quote your own measured numbers, say how you measured them, and leave a figure out rather than estimate it.

Keep one bug you found with instruments

An I2C bus that locks up, a brown-out reset, a noisy ADC: a bullet about tracing a fault on the bench is the clearest proof of embedded experience a reader can get from a page.

Say what runs off the target

Unit tests on the host, a simulator, hardware-in-the-loop rigs, static analysis. Teams that ship devices to the field want firmware engineers who test before they flash.

Name the product, not just the part

Write "vibration sensor for industrial pumps" or "motor drive controller" so a reader outside your company understands the constraints: battery, safety, cost or hard real-time deadlines.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • embedded C
  • ARM Cortex-M
  • FreeRTOS
  • Zephyr RTOS
  • bare-metal firmware
  • device drivers
  • I2C, SPI and UART
  • CAN bus
  • Bluetooth Low Energy
  • low-power design
  • bootloader
  • OTA firmware updates
  • hardware bring-up
  • MISRA C
  • host-based unit testing

Mistakes to avoid

  • A microcontroller you only used in a dev kit tutorial presented as production experience.
  • Bullets with no hardware context. Say which chip, which RTOS or bare metal, and what the board does.
  • Writing "MISRA compliant" when you ran a checker on new code only. Describe what was checked and how deviations were handled.
  • Leaving out bench skills. Scopes, logic analysers and debug probes are part of the job and part of the technical screen.

Frequently asked questions

Should an embedded engineer list both C and C++?

Yes, separately, with the depth of each. Many firmware teams write C with a restricted subset of C++ or none at all, so "C (eight years), embedded C++ (drivers)" answers the question a reviewer will ask.

How do I show hardware bring-up experience?

Name the board revisions you brought up, the tools you used (scope, logic analyser, SWD or JTAG probe) and one fault you found. Bring-up bullets show you can work when the hardware itself is the unknown.

Do hobby electronics projects count?

Yes, if they are finished and public: schematics, firmware and a measured result. A solar-powered sensor that has run outdoors for a season says more than a list of dev boards you own.

Should I mention MISRA C or other coding standards?

Only if you worked to one. MISRA describes MISRA C as guidelines for C where safety, security and code quality matter, first written for road vehicle software; say whether you wrote new code to it, ran a checker or handled deviations.

Where does an electronics degree go in this template?

Meridian prints education after projects, near the bottom. That suits an experienced engineer; a fresher with little work history can carry the degree further through a final-year project entry.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
