Security guard resume template

Short answer

Olivia suits a security guard working client-facing posts: its blue header band presents your name the way a lobby officer presents a building, and the skill rows come before the jobs. The fictional sample is a San Jose security officer with five years across a corporate campus, retail floors and events, covering access control, patrols, incident reports, alarm response and an active California guard card.

Why Olivia suits a security guard resume

Olivia sets your name and contact details in white on a full-width blue band and lists skills in labelled rows before the work history. For lobby, concierge and residential tower posts, where presentation is part of the job, it is the most polished look of the seven, and access control systems and report writing are read before employer names.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian keeps the same skills-first order with no colour, a better match for patrol, industrial or warehouse security posts.

What goes in each section, in Olivia's order

Olivia prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. State the post types you have worked (lobby, patrol, retail, events, industrial), your years, whether you are armed or unarmed, and your license status in your state. The license prints near the end, so say it here first.
  2. Skills. Technical row: access control, patrols, report writing, alarm response, emergency procedures, de-escalation. Tools row: the access control, video and guard tour systems you have used. Add a language if you can work a post in it.
  3. Work Experience. Name the contract firm and the kind of site you were posted to, with its size (buildings, badge holders, crowd). Then access and patrol duties, reports, alarms and incidents handled, and any training of new officers.
  4. Education. High school diploma or equivalent, plus any criminal justice courses. One line is enough.
  5. Certifications. Your state registration or license (in California, the BSIS security guard registration), any firearms permit, and first aid or CPR with expiry dates.

How to make the sample yours

Show the license and training

In California, BSIS requires power to arrest training before registration, 32 hours of security officer skills training within the first six months and 8 hours of continuing training every year. Writing "annual training current" tells an employer you can post now.

Armed or unarmed

Say which you are. Carrying a firearm on duty in California takes a separate BSIS firearms permit on top of the guard registration.

Give the size of your posts

Number of buildings, badge holders, crowd size or patrol area. It tells a supervisor what kind of site you can handle on your own.

Count from your logs

Alarms cleared, patrols completed, incidents written up. Use the numbers in your daily activity reports and leave out names and case details.

Aiming for corporate security

Lead with access control systems, visitor management and front-desk manner: the parts of the job a corporate client sees every day.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Calling yourself armed security without a current firearms permit.
  • Duties copied from post orders with no site size and no results.

Frequently asked questions

How does the California guard card process work?

You apply to BSIS for a security guard registration. Applicants go through a Live Scan background check with the FBI and California DOJ, and power to arrest training must be completed before the registration is issued.

How do I write a security guard resume with no experience?

Lead with your guard card or the training you have completed, then customer service, retail or military work that shows reliability and calm under pressure. Add CPR and first aid if you hold them.

Should I list every site I was posted to?

Group posts under the contract firm and give the type and size of each site. Leave out anything about how a client site is secured.

How long should a security guard resume be?

One page. Supervisors look for license status, post types, reliability and report writing, and all four fit on a single page.

Is a second language worth listing?

Yes, if you can use it on duty. It helps at front desks, hotels and events where visitors speak it.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Olivia PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
