Web developer resume template
Short answer
Olivia is the pick for a web developer who sends a resume to agencies and small-business clients: its full-width blue header band stands out on screen, which is where those readers look at it. The fictional sample has seven years of freelance and agency work on WordPress and Shopify sites, with page-weight and accessibility results and a short list of client sites to visit.

Why Olivia suits a web developer resume
Olivia has a solid blue band across the top with the name and contact line in white, the boldest look of the seven. Agency owners and small-business clients usually read a resume on screen and judge a web developer partly on presentation, and Olivia still prints skills in labelled rows above experience.
Second choice: Leslie. Resumity labels Olivia "Balanced" because of the colour band; Leslie keeps one touch of blue on a white page and suits in-house roles applied for through a careers portal.
What goes in each section, in Olivia's order
Olivia prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Say who you build for (small businesses, nonprofits, an agency), on which platforms, and what clients value about your work: speed, accessibility, sites they can update without calling you.
- Skills. Platforms and languages in Technical (WordPress, Shopify Liquid, PHP, JavaScript), everyday tools in Tools, one or two client-facing skills in Soft Skills. Mention block themes or headless builds only if you have shipped them.
- Work Experience. Freelance work is a job: give it a business name or "self-employed", dates and bullets. Count the sites you shipped, then pick two or three projects with a measurable change: page weight, load time, form completions, hours saved for the client.
- Education. An associate degree, a certificate or a degree in something else each fit on one line. If you are self-taught, the client list does the work and this section can stay short.
- Selected client sites. Olivia prints this list last. The sample calls it "Selected client sites", with each site, its platform and one result. Use live sites you are allowed to name; readers will click them.

Web developer with seven years building and looking after websites for small businesses, nonprofits and a marketing agency. Custom WordPress block themes, Shopify stores, page speed and accessibility fixes, and handovers that let clients edit their own content.

- Fixed labels, focus states and error messages on a nonprofit's donation form ahead of its year-end appeal.
- Write a one-page editing guide and record a short walkthrough video for every handover.

How to make the sample yours
Replace the client list with sites that still look good
Check that each one loads fast and has not been rebuilt by someone else since your handover. Drop any you cannot name for confidentiality reasons.
Pick your platform mix
If you build on Webflow, Squarespace, Drupal or a static site generator, swap it into the headline and skills. Keep the language line (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP) so readers see you can go beyond the page builder.
Give the freelance years a structure
Keep the trading name, state how many clients or sites, and write bullets about outcomes rather than tasks. Quiet weeks between contracts need no explanation on the page.
Mention maintenance work
Care plans, updates, backups and uptime checks show long client relationships. Agencies value developers who stay reachable after launch.
Keep the handover habit
The sample writes an editing guide for each client. If you train clients or write docs, say so: it is a reason to choose you over a cheaper builder.

Mistakes to avoid
- A screenshot-only portfolio. Link live sites so a reader can check speed and the mobile layout.
- Listing page builders as your main skill with no code behind them, when the role asks for a developer.
- Leaving freelance work off, or hiding it behind a vague "consultant" title.
- Claiming SEO results (rankings, traffic) you did not measure or cannot show.
How the sample PDF reads in text extractors
We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.
| Extractor | Name, email, phone | Headings | Bullets intact |
|---|---|---|---|
| pdf.js 4.10.38 | All found | 5 of 5 | 7 of 7 |

Frequently asked questions
How do I list freelance web work on a resume?
As one job with your trading name or "self-employed", your start date and "Present", and bullets that count clients and describe the best results. Name individual clients in the extra list if they agree.
Should a web developer include a portfolio link?
Yes, in the header. Olivia shows your links in the white contact line on the blue band; check that the portfolio loads quickly on a phone, since many clients will open it there.
Do WordPress skills count as development?
Custom themes, blocks, plugins and PHP do. Configuring a bought theme and installing plugins is site building; say which you did so the reader knows what they are hiring.
How many client sites should I list?
Three to six, chosen for variety and results. A long list of small brochure sites says less than a few with clear before-and-after numbers.
Should I put my rates or availability on the resume?
No. Rates belong in a proposal or a conversation, and availability fits in the cover letter or the email you send with the resume.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Olivia PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
