Automotive industry resume template
Short answer
FAANGPath suits automotive engineering and quality resumes: its labelled skill rows print before the jobs, so PPAP, PFMEA, 8D and measurement skills are read first. The fictional sample is a supplier quality engineer at a Tier 1 seating supplier near Detroit who started as a quality technician, with defect rates cut, launch approvals and root causes found. Dealership technicians will find notes on ASE below.

Why FAANGPath suits an automotive resume
FAANGPath is built for technical candidates who want their tools read before their jobs, and automotive quality and engineering screens look for the core tools by name. Its labelled rows put PPAP, APQP, PFMEA and measurement system analysis first, on a black and grey page with full-width rules under each heading.
Second choice: Meridian. Meridian prints the same order with grey rules running beside each heading and a colon after each skill label.
What goes in each section, in FAANGPath's order
FAANGPath prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Say where you sit in the automotive chain (OEM, Tier 1 or Tier 2 supplier, dealership, aftermarket, collision) and what you work on: parts, systems or whole vehicles. A seating supplier, a dealership service department and a battery plant hire for very different evidence.
- Skills. The core tools are screened by name, so they lead: PPAP, APQP, PFMEA, control plans, MSA, SPC, 8D. Software and measurement equipment get their own row.
- Work Experience. Use parts per million defective, PPAP approvals, launch timing, warranty or field returns, audit findings closed and cost of poor quality. Every 8D or launch bullet should name the part family and the root cause in plain words.
- Education. An engineering or engineering technology degree on one line. Technicians from trade schools and apprenticeships list their programme here.
- Certifications. Internal auditor training, quality credentials, or ASE certifications for technicians. ASE says an initial certification is good for five years, so keep dates in view.

How to make the sample yours
Use IATF 16949 language accurately
IATF 16949:2016 is the automotive quality management system standard that replaced ISO/TS 16949, and the IATF keeps it aligned with ISO 9001. Say you worked within it or audited against it; certification belongs to a site, not a person.
Switch the sample to dealership service
Technicians lead with ASE certifications, the makes they are factory-trained on, hours flagged and comeback rate; service advisors with repair orders written, hours per repair order and satisfaction scores. ASE asks for one to three years of hands-on experience depending on the test.
Name the part families
Seat tracks, stamped brackets, wiring harnesses, battery modules. Specifics tell another supplier you can start on their parts without a long ramp-up.
Give launches their own bullet
New program launches are a distinct skill: PPAP timing, run-at-rate, early production containment. One bullet on a launch you supported is worth adding even for production roles.
Translate from other manufacturing
Aerospace, medical device and appliance quality people use similar tools under other names. Map your terms (first article inspection, validation) to automotive ones where they genuinely match.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.
- automotive
- IATF 16949
- PPAP
- APQP
- PFMEA
- control plan
- 8D
- supplier quality
- parts per million (PPM)
- measurement system analysis
- statistical process control
- root cause analysis
- program launch
- Tier 1 supplier
- continuous improvement
Mistakes to avoid
- "IATF 16949 certified" about yourself. Sites are certified; people complete auditor training.
- An 8D bullet with no root cause or result.
- Every core tool listed without one example of using it.
- For technicians: ASE certifications without the test areas, or past their expiry.

Frequently asked questions
How do I write an automotive technician resume?
Put your ASE certifications and the makes you are trained on in the headline, then bullets on hours flagged, comeback rate, diagnostic work and any specialty (electrical, diesel, EV). ASE certification also requires documented hands-on experience, so state your years accurately.
What is the difference between OEM and supplier experience?
OEMs design and assemble vehicles; suppliers make parts and systems for them. Supplier roles lean on PPAP, PPM and launch support, OEM roles more on program management and supplier oversight. Say which side you have worked on.
Should I mention electric vehicle experience?
Yes, specifically: battery modules, high-voltage safety training, thermal systems or charging. EV programs search for these skills by name.
Can quality experience from another industry move into automotive?
Yes, especially from aerospace, medical device and appliance manufacturing. Translate your terms and learn the core tools you have not used yet.
Is a two-page resume acceptable in automotive engineering?
For engineers with eight or more years and several programs, yes. Technicians and early-career engineers should keep to one page.
Will applicant tracking systems read this FAANGPath PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
