Architecture resume template

Short answer

Daniel suits architecture, where a calm, considered page reflects design sense: its rounded grey heading pills soften the layout and its skills grid shows Revit and design tools before the jobs. The fictional sample is an architectural designer at a Portland firm, Revit lead on a 220-unit building, with permit work, construction administration tasks and licensure progress listed separately from her title.

Why Daniel suits an architecture resume

Resumity suggests Daniel for designers, and its rounded grey heading pills give a quieter, more considered look than the rule-based layouts while staying a single column of text. The skills grid sits above the jobs, so software depth (Revit, Rhino, rendering) shows early, and the portfolio link in the contact line carries the visuals.

Second choice: Leslie. Leslie puts experience before skills with one blue accent, a better fit for project architects whose project history is the main argument.

Daniel template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Daniel's order

Daniel prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. State your building types, the phases you work in (schematic design through construction administration) and your licensure status in plain words. Firms staff projects by type and phase, and licensure progress tells them what you can take on now and later.
  2. Skills. Daniel prints three unlabelled columns before the jobs: design and documentation skills, then software (Revit, Rhino, AutoCAD, rendering), then client and consultant skills. Revit depth is often checked first, so say if you have led a model.
  3. Work Experience. Each bullet gives the building type and scale (units, floors, square feet), the phase and your part: model lead, code analysis, details, construction administration. Architectural outcomes are permits issued, competitions won, budgets held and drawing sets issued on time.
  4. Education. Give the degree exactly. NCARB's path to licensure begins with education, and its guidance covers NAAB-accredited programs, so note accreditation where it applies; a thesis topic or studio award can sit here while recent.
  5. Licensure progress. Use the extra list for licensure progress: ARE divisions passed and your AXP reporting status. NCARB sets out the steps as education, experience through the AXP, the Architect Registration Examination, then licensure through a state board.

How to make the sample yours

Be careful with the word architect

NCARB notes that each state has its own rules for practising architecture. Until you are licensed, use the title your firm gives you and check your state board's rules before putting "architect" anywhere on the page.

Link a short portfolio

Five or six projects, with your role named on each, in a tight PDF or web portfolio. Put the link in the contact line; images belong there, not on the resume.

Show phase coverage

Firms value designers who can take a project from schematic design to construction administration. If you have worked in every phase, make each visible in at least one bullet.

Name building types and scale

Multifamily, healthcare, education, workplace, civic: studios are organised around them. Units, floors or square footage let a studio lead judge your experience.

Adjust for interiors or landscape

Interior designers add finishes, furniture and FF&E schedules; landscape designers add planting plans, grading and site work. Each has its own licensing body and rules, so follow that profession's guidance on titles.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Calling yourself an architect before you are licensed.
  • Pasting renderings into the resume. Keep visuals in the portfolio and describe the work in text.
  • Software lists with no sign of depth, such as model lead, families built or standards written.
  • Project names with no type, scale or role.

Frequently asked questions

Should I attach a portfolio to an architecture resume?

Link one in the contact line and attach a short PDF only if the posting asks. Show five or six projects with your role on each; hiring architects read the two together.

How do I show progress toward licensure?

List ARE divisions passed and your AXP status in an extra section, and mention licensure progress in the summary. Avoid wording that implies you are already licensed.

How long should an architecture resume be?

One page for most designers with under ten years; two for project architects and above with long project lists. The portfolio carries the visual detail.

Can I move into architecture from construction or engineering?

Yes, into roles such as technical designer or construction administration, where site knowledge is valued. Licensure still requires the education, experience and examination steps your state sets.

Should I list design competitions and awards?

Yes, briefly, in your bullets or the extra list, with your role. Awards won by firm projects can be mentioned as long as your part is clear.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Daniel PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
