Banking resume template

Short answer

Leslie is a good fit for banking: experience prints right after the summary, so a loan book, branch results or a clean audit come before any list of systems, and its single blue accent keeps the page conservative. The fictional sample moved from personal banker to commercial credit analyst at a community bank, with deals underwritten, risk ratings confirmed by loan review, covenant tracking and annual BSA/AML training.

Why Leslie suits a banking resume

Leslie prints work experience straight after the summary and only then the skills, which suits banking, where the loan book, deposit growth or audit record outweighs a list of platforms. The centred blue header is the one touch of colour; the rest of the page stays plain, which fits a conservative, heavily examined industry.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta is fully black and grey with education straight after experience, handy for graduate and management trainee programmes that screen on degree.

What goes in each section, in Leslie's order

Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Name the business line (retail, commercial, mortgage, wealth, operations or compliance) and the type and size of customer. Banks are organised by line, and a hiring manager wants to see in one sentence that you already speak theirs.
  2. Work Experience. Banking evidence is volume, portfolio size and clean records: loans underwritten and their total, accounts opened, balances grown, audit or exam results, and risk ratings that held up in loan review. A branch job before a credit or operations role is worth keeping; it shows you know customers and front-line compliance.
  3. Skills. Leslie prints labelled rows after the jobs. Put credit or operations methods in Technical (spreading, cash flow analysis, risk rating, account reviews) and named systems in Tools: the core banking platform, the loan origination system and Excel.
  4. Education. A finance, accounting or economics degree on one line. Graduate programmes weigh it more; for experienced hires, the credit work above carries the page.
  5. Training. Use the extra list for training banks take seriously, such as annual BSA/AML training, a credit school or a lending course sponsored by your bank. Include only items with a date.

Megan Doyle

Commercial Credit Analyst

Charlotte, NC | megan.doyle@example.com | (704) 555-0119 | linkedin.com/in/sample-megan-doyle

Commercial credit analyst at a community bank, underwriting owner-occupied real estate and equipment loans from $250,000 to $5M for small and mid-sized businesses. Spent three years as a personal banker first, so knows the customer side of a loan file as well as the spreads.

Experience

Commercial Credit Analyst, Piedmont Community Bank, Charlotte, NC (03/2023 to Present)

  • Underwrote 60 commercial loan requests totalling about $85M last year: spreading tax returns and financial statements, global cash flow, debt service coverage and collateral analysis.
  • Write credit memos with recommended risk ratings; loan review agreed with every rating in a sample of 25 files at the annual review.
  • Track financial covenants on a 140-loan portfolio and send early warnings to relationship managers; two weakening credits were restructured before default.
  • Rebuilt the spreading template so ratios calculate the same way in every memo, saving about a day per first draft.

Personal Banker, Piedmont Community Bank, Gastonia, NC (05/2020 to 02/2023)

  • Opened about 25 consumer and small business accounts a month, completing customer identification and due diligence on each.
  • Referred small business owners to the commercial team, leading to 18 funded loans in two years.
  • Had no exceptions on account opening files in two consecutive internal audits.
  • Noticed a customer making repeated cash deposits just under the reporting threshold and escalated it to the BSA team.

Training

  • Annual BSA/AML training, completed every year since 2020
  • Commercial lending credit school sponsored by the bank, 2023

How to make the sample yours

Use the regulatory word that matches your work

The FFIEC BSA/AML Examination Manual treats customer due diligence, suspicious activity reporting and currency transaction reporting as separate areas. If you worked on one of them, name it instead of writing "compliance".

Give loan and deposit figures as totals and counts

Number of credits, total commitments, portfolio size, average deal size. Round them; for a bank reader, scale matters more than the last digit.

Show that you protect the bank

A structuring pattern escalated, a covenant breach flagged early, an audit with no exceptions. Banks reward people who catch problems before examiners do.

Add an NMLS ID if you originate mortgages

Under the SAFE Act, bank employees who originate residential mortgages register through the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry and receive a unique identifier. If that is your job, put the NMLS ID in your headline or contact line.

Translate from outside banking

Retail managers bring sales targets and cash handling, accountants bring financial statement analysis, hospitality staff bring service under pressure. Rewrite those bullets in bank terms: accounts, balances, accuracy and risk.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Mistakes to avoid

  • Sales-only bullets ("exceeded referral goals") with nothing about accuracy, compliance or risk.
  • Naming borrowers, businesses or loan amounts that could identify a customer.
  • Calling yourself a lender or loan officer when you analysed and recommended credits without lending authority.
  • Leaving out audit and exam results, one of the clearest signs of reliability inside a bank.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move from a bank branch into credit or lending?

Pull out the analytical parts of branch work (account reviews, small business referrals, loan applications you helped assemble), take any internal credit training your bank offers, and put both on the page. Ask the credit team which spreading or memo work you could shadow.

What should a bank teller resume emphasise?

Cash accuracy (balancing record, variances), transaction volume, customer identification checks and referrals to bankers. Teller roles are judged on reliability, so a clean balancing record makes a strong bullet.

Should I mention BSA/AML training?

Yes, briefly, with the year. It shows you already know the bank's anti-money laundering procedures, and it matters more if you are moving toward compliance or operations.

How is a banking resume different from a general finance resume?

Banking employers look for regulated-industry evidence: customer due diligence, audits, credit quality, and loan and deposit figures. Corporate finance roles focus on forecasting and modelling. Use the vocabulary of the bank line you are applying to.

How long should a banking resume be?

One page for most branch, operations and analyst roles. Senior lenders and managers with large portfolios and several positions can use two.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
