Investment management resume template
Short answer
Catalyst suits experienced investment professionals: it skips the summary and opens on your current coverage, models and recommendations, with the CFA charter carried in the headline. The fictional sample is a senior equity analyst at a Boston asset manager who started in wealth management, with sector coverage, ideas adopted by the portfolio manager, committee work and ESG integration. Notes for wealth management roles follow below.

Why Catalyst suits an investment management resume
Catalyst opens on the latest job with no summary, so an investment reader meets your coverage, fund size and recommendations immediately. Its large left-aligned name and teal headings in IBM Plex Sans look current without being loud, and the headline line under the name has room for the role, the sector and the CFA charter.
Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta keeps a summary and prints education right after experience, a better fit for graduates applying to analyst programmes on the strength of their degree.
What goes in each section, in Catalyst's order
Catalyst prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Work Experience. With no summary printed, the headline names your role, sector and charter. Then give coverage (sectors, number of names, asset class), fund or book size, the recommendations or portfolio decisions you made and how you presented them. Handle performance with care: say what you contributed, using figures your compliance team would approve.
- Skills. Technical carries the investment craft: valuation, modelling, portfolio construction, attribution, risk. Tools carries the data platforms (Bloomberg, FactSet, Morningstar Direct) and any coding; if you write Python or SQL, it belongs next to Excel.
- Education. Degree, school and year on one line. Investment firms hire from quantitative and non-quantitative degrees alike, and after a few years the charter, or progress toward it, tends to count for more than the degree.
- Certifications. Only charterholders may put CFA after their name. CFA Institute requires all three exams, 4,000 hours of relevant work over at least 36 months and membership for the charter; before that, write "Passed Level II of the CFA Program", or "CFA Program candidate" while registered. Catalyst prints this last, so repeat the charter in your headline.

How to make the sample yours
Handle performance figures carefully
Investment firms take performance presentation seriously; CFA Institute's GIPS standards, voluntary rules for calculating and presenting performance based on fair representation and full disclosure, exist for that reason. Quote returns only as your compliance team would, and say exactly what you contributed.
Rewrite the sample for wealth management
Swap coverage and recommendations for client households, assets under advice, retention, financial plans delivered and new assets brought in. The CFP Board requires 6,000 hours of financial planning experience, or 4,000 through its apprenticeship pathway, so record those hours as you go.
Show the process, not only the picks
Models, management meetings, committee presentations and post-mortems on wrong calls show how you think. A losing idea you exited early, with the reason, can say more than a winner.
Name the asset class and style
Long-only equity, credit, multi-asset, private markets, quantitative. Firms hire for style, and a fixed income team will not read an equity resume closely unless you explain the bridge.
Keep client and fund names compliant
Naming a public mutual fund you worked on may be fine; naming private clients or confidential mandates is not. Describe their size and type instead.
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

- investment committee
- asset allocation

Mistakes to avoid
- "CFA Level III" or "CFA (expected)" next to your name. Use the factual wording CFA Institute allows.
- Claiming fund returns as your own when you were one analyst on a team.
- A list of every Bloomberg function you know. Name the platforms and what you built with them.
- Leaving out how you present ideas; committee and client presentations are a large part of investment and wealth roles alike.

Frequently asked questions
How do I show investment performance on a resume?
Describe what you were responsible for (a sleeve, a coverage list, recommendations) and use figures your firm would allow, ideally relative to a benchmark over a stated period. If you cannot share numbers, describe the process and how your ideas were adopted.
Can I list CFA levels I have passed?
Yes, in CFA Institute's wording: "Passed Level I of the CFA Program" (or II, or III), and "CFA Program candidate" only while registered for an exam. Passed levels never go after your name.
What is different about a wealth management resume?
It centres on clients: households served, assets under advice, retention, plans delivered, referrals and new assets. Add the licenses and certifications your role needs, such as the CFP, and lead with relationship skills.
How do I move into investment management from accounting or banking?
Lead with analysis: valuation, financial statement work, credit analysis. Enrol in the CFA Program to show intent, and prepare two or three written stock or credit pitches you can discuss in interviews.
Should I include personal investing on my resume?
Only as a short, factual extra, such as a student-managed fund or a published research piece. Personal trading results are hard to verify and can raise compliance questions with an employer.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Catalyst PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
