Data science resume template

Short answer

Meridian is a safe choice for data science and analytics jobs, especially after a career change: its labelled skill rows (SQL, Python, statistics, the BI tool) print above the work history, before a reader meets an unrelated job title. The fictional sample taught maths for seven years before becoming a data analyst at a health analytics firm, working with de-identified claims data, a readmissions dashboard and reviewed, re-runnable notebooks.

Why Meridian suits a data science resume

Meridian sets labelled rows for Technical, Tools and Soft Skills above work experience. Data teams in every industry screen on SQL, a language such as Python, statistics and a BI tool, so those rows answer the first question, and for career changers they appear before the old job title does. The page uses no colour, so charts are left to the interview.

Second choice: FAANGPath. FAANGPath prints the same order on a centred page, with full-width heading rules and a dot after each skill label.

What goes in each section, in Meridian's order

Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Two sentences: the data you work with (claims, transactions, sensor readings, web events) and the decisions it feeds. Data teams exist in every sector, so the domain is what separates you; after a career change, name the earlier field and what it taught you.
  2. Skills. Put statistical methods next to languages in Technical, the warehouse, BI tool and version control in Tools, and keep Soft Skills to how you explain results. Write "Python (pandas, statsmodels)" so a reader sees the libraries, not only the language.
  3. Work Experience. Write each bullet as question, data, decision: who asked, what you analysed and what changed. Add one bullet on reproducibility (version control, peer review, checks on data) and, if you handle personal or health data, one on how you protected it.
  4. Projects. For career changers, a public-data project with code and a short write-up is the best stand-in for a data job title. Choose a question someone in your target industry would care about and show the path from raw data to a conclusion.
  5. Education. Meridian prints education after projects. A bootcamp or certificate sits here with your degree; a maths, science, economics or social science degree is worth keeping even if old, because it shows quantitative grounding.

Data Analyst, Healthcare Claims and Outcomes

Minneapolis, MN | tomasz.kowalski@example.com | (612) 555-0121 | linkedin.com/in/sample-tomasz-kowalski | github.com/sample-tomasz-kowalski

Data analyst at a health analytics company, answering questions about hospital readmissions and the cost of care from de-identified claims data. Taught high school maths for seven years before moving into data, and writes every analysis so a non-specialist can follow the reasoning.

Experience

Data Analyst, Northstar Health Insights, Minneapolis, MN (08/2023 to Present)

  • Built the Tableau readmissions dashboard that 11 hospital clients use to compare 30-day readmission rates by service line against peer groups.
  • Wrote the SQL for a cost-of-care cohort study covering 1.4 million de-identified member records; the client used it to choose two clinics for a care management pilot.
  • Moved recurring analyses from personal spreadsheets into versioned notebooks with peer review, so any result can be re-run from source.
  • Check every client extract against the company's de-identification rules before analysis; flagged two files that still held dates of service.

Mathematics Teacher, Riverbend Public Schools, Saint Paul, MN (08/2016 to 06/2023)

  • Taught algebra and statistics to about 150 students a year.
  • Analysed three years of assessment data in Excel and R to regroup students for intervention; the pass rate in the targeted course rose from 68% to 79%.
  • Built the department's gradebook checks that caught entry errors before report cards went home.

Projects

Air quality and asthma visits: A public-data analysis joining state air quality readings with county emergency visit counts, with code and a write-up on GitHub.

  • Presented at a local data meetup's monthly showcase.

Education

Certificate, Data Analytics, Twin Cities Technical College (06/2023)

BS, Mathematics Education, Mississippi Bluffs University (05/2016)

Skills

SQL, Python (pandas, statsmodels), Regression and hypothesis testing, Cohort analysis, Data validation, De-identified data handling, Snowflake, Tableau, Git and GitHub, Jupyter, R, Excel, Explaining statistics to clinicians, Analysis memos, Peer code review

How to make the sample yours

Name the data, not just the tools

Claims, payments, clickstream, lab results, telemetry: say what the rows are. Hiring managers in each industry look for people who already know the quirks of their data.

Show privacy handling when you touch personal data

For US health data, HHS describes two ways to de-identify under the HIPAA Privacy Rule: removing a specified list of identifiers (Safe Harbor) or an expert determination that the risk of re-identification is very small. If you applied either, or worked under GDPR or a data use agreement, one line covers it.

Translate your old job into analysis

Teachers analyse assessment results, nurses track outcomes, accountants reconcile. Pick the earlier bullets where you used data to change a decision, as the sample does with regrouping students.

Swap the BI tool and warehouse to match

Power BI or Looker for Tableau, BigQuery or Redshift for Snowflake. Keep only tools you have used on real data, including in a project.

Choose analyst, scientist or engineer before sending

Analysts lead with questions answered and dashboards in use; scientists with models and experiments; engineers with pipelines and volumes. One person can write all three versions, but each needs its own headline and bullet order.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • data analysis
  • SQL
  • Python
  • statistics
  • hypothesis testing
  • regression
  • data visualisation
  • Tableau
  • data cleaning
  • cohort analysis
  • reproducible analysis
  • Git
  • de-identified data
  • stakeholder communication

Mistakes to avoid

  • A projects section built on the same famous tutorial datasets as every bootcamp cohort. Use data from the industry you want to join.
  • Machine learning algorithms you have only met in a course, listed on an analyst application.
  • Dashboards counted ("built 30 dashboards") with no user or decision attached.
  • Saying nothing about sensitive data when the employer works in health, finance or HR.

We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move into data science from teaching or another non-technical field?

Many people do, usually through a data analyst role first. Show SQL and one analysis language, a project in the industry you want, and the earlier bullets where you already used data, such as assessment results or budgets.

Do I need a master's degree for data jobs?

Analyst and many analytics roles do not require one; some data scientist postings ask for it. For a first data job, a relevant project and solid SQL often matter more.

Should I put a GitHub link on a data resume?

Yes, if it holds readable work: a cleaned notebook, a README that states the question, and code someone else could run. Archive half-finished course exercises first.

How do I describe work on confidential or health data?

Give the type and scale of the data (de-identified claims, about a million records) and the question, never anything that could identify a person or a client. If you followed de-identification rules or a data use agreement, say so briefly.

Is a data analytics certificate worth listing?

Yes, when you are changing careers and it is recent; it shows structured training. After a year or two in a data role it can shrink to one line under education.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
