No photo resume template for the US, UK and Canada

Short answer

None of Resumity's seven templates prints a photo, so every one of them is a no-photo resume. Olivia is the pick if you are used to a photo at the top: its blue header band gives the top of the page weight without one. University career services in the UK, Canada and the US advise leaving photos off. The fictional sample is a mechanical engineer trained in Brazil, now applying in Toronto.

Why Olivia suits a no photo resume

Olivia fills the top of the page with a full-width blue band carrying your name, contact line and headline in white, so the space a photo would take in some CV styles goes to a strong header instead. Skills follow the summary, which lets an engineer trained abroad name familiar software and standards before the reader meets unfamiliar employer names.

Second choice: Leslie. Leslie centres the name, contact line and headline in blue on a white page; a quieter header for someone who wants colour without a solid band.

What goes in each section, in Olivia's order

Olivia prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Discipline, years and the kind of products you have designed. This replaces the personal details block that some CV traditions place beside the photo, so date of birth and marital status do not come back here either.
  2. Skills. Use the names local employers use for software and standards. Where your training followed a different standard, list the one you now work to, such as ASME Y14.5 for drawings.
  3. Work Experience. Give employers abroad a city, a country and a few words on what they make, since a Toronto reader will not know them. Keep the numbers in the bullets: they translate across borders better than company names do.
  4. Education. Use the English name of the degree, the school and the country. If the degree has been assessed for equivalence, a short note in the entry saves the reader a question.
  5. Certifications. Software and industry certifications with issuer and year. Olivia prints them near the end of the page, after education.

How to make the sample yours

Remove the photo block completely

If you are adapting an older CV, delete the photo and the personal details beside it (date of birth, marital status, health). Do not leave an empty box or a gap where they were.

Let the headline introduce you

Without a photo, the line under your name does the introducing. A plain title such as "Mechanical Design Engineer" works better than a slogan.

Translate titles and degrees

Use the closest local job title, with the original in brackets if an employer might check it. Do the same for degree names.

Point to LinkedIn instead

If you want employers to put a face to the name, a professional photo on your LinkedIn profile, linked in the header, does that without putting it on the resume.

Check the target country first

Kent's careers service notes that some countries outside the UK may expect a photo and date of birth. When applying there, follow local practice; Resumity's templates cannot add a photo.

Keywords to keep where they are true

  • SolidWorks
  • GD&T
  • ASME Y14.5
  • tolerance stack-up
  • design for manufacturing
  • sheet metal design
  • FEA
  • prototype testing
  • engineering change orders

Mistakes to avoid

  • Adding a photo to the DOCX after export. It undoes the point of a no-photo layout, and all three career services cited on this page advise against it.
  • Date of birth, marital status, religion or health details. Memorial University's career office also lists the Social Insurance Number among things to leave off a Canadian resume.
  • Keeping a "Personal details" section at the top. Start with the summary instead.
  • Employers and schools abroad with no explanation. Add the city, the country and a few words on the organisation.

Frequently asked questions

Should a resume have a photo?

In the US, the UK and Canada, generally no. Pomona College's career office and Memorial University's career services both say not to include one, and the University of Kent notes that UK CVs do not tend to include a photograph.

What if a job posting asks for a photo?

Follow the posting. Resumity's templates do not print photos, so you would need to supply one separately or prepare that application with another tool.

What else should I leave off besides the photo?

Age or date of birth, marital status, religion and health details. For Canada, Memorial University also lists your Social Insurance Number; for the US, Pomona College adds race and visa status.

Does a resume without a photo look empty?

Not with a strong header. Olivia's blue band and Leslie's blue header both give the top of the page weight, and in the plainer templates a clear headline under your name does the same job.

Where can employers see what I look like?

On your LinkedIn profile, if you choose to add a photo there. Link it in the header and keep the resume itself about your work.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Olivia PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 6 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
