CV template for Slovakia (Slovak CV format)

Short answer

Leslie suits a Slovak CV (životopis) for an engineer: a short profile, work history newest first, then skills and education, closing with referees. Career counsellors at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University recommend one or at most two full pages, and a careers deck from the university in Trenčín says not to be afraid of giving your date of birth. The fictional sample is a quality engineer at a car parts supplier in Trnava.

Why Leslie suits a Slovakia resume

Leslie prints work experience right after the profile and ahead of skills, so an engineer's plants, launches and audits fill the top half of the page. Its centred blue header and short blue underlines add one restrained touch of colour, and the custom section at the end holds the referees.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta also puts jobs first but moves education up to follow them, in black and grey only; choose it for a strictly conservative look.

Leslie template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Leslie's order

Leslie prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Three lines on your field, your years in the industry and the standards you work to (IATF 16949, VDA 6.3). Slovak employers read it in Slovak: EURES lists a CV in Slovak among the papers to prepare before moving to Slovakia.
  2. Work Experience. The Trenčín deck asks for the company name, your position, the years you started and left and a short, clear description of the work, starting with the latest job. Month and year say more than the year alone when a role lasted under two years.
  3. Skills. Quality methods first, then software, then each language with a level. The Trenčín deck also suggests giving your driving licence category if you drive actively; add it as one line under the languages in Word if supplier visits are part of the job.
  4. Education. Start with the highest level reached and write the full name of the school without abbreviations, then the field, the title and the year you finished, as the Trenčín deck sets out. Primary school stays off.
  5. Certifications. Auditor qualifications print near the bottom in Leslie. When an advert asks for a VDA 6.3 process auditor, say so in the headline too, as the sample does.
  6. References. The Trenčín deck calls references a desirable part of the CV and says to ask each contact for consent beforehand and tell them you have applied. Give name, role, company and one way to reach them.

How to make the sample yours

Keep to one or two full pages

UPJŠ's career counsellors recommend one page and two full pages at most, and suggest one page for positions that draw many applicants. They note that academic CVs can be longer because publications and projects take space.

Add the personal data consent

EURES reminds applicants to attach consent to the processing of personal data so the employer can enter the application in its database. The Trenčín deck words it under Act No. 18/2018 Coll. on personal data protection; put the sentence at the end of the cover letter, or under the referees in Word.

Birth date in, marital status out

The Trenčín deck tells graduates not to be afraid to give their date of birth, and to leave out marital status, nationality, political affiliation and relatives' details. The template has no birth date field, so add one under your name in the DOCX file.

Photo: a formal portrait if you use one

The same deck recommends a current portrait of the kind used on official documents, saying a photo makes you more personal to the recruiter. Resumity templates print none; insert one in Word in the DOCX file.

Sign the cover letter the way you send it

EURES says to sign the application by hand; the Trenčín deck says a letter sent electronically need not carry a handwritten signature and an electronic one will do. Follow the route the employer asks you to apply through.

Choose the template whose order fits

UPJŠ says the order of sections is yours to set according to the job. Resumity templates fix their order, so pick the one that already leads with what matters, and write in standard language with figures where you have them.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing marital status, nationality or political affiliation, which the Trenčín deck calls unnecessary data.
  • Sending an application without the personal data consent that EURES says to attach.
  • Abbreviating the name of your school or faculty instead of writing it in full.
  • Spilling onto a third page when UPJŠ recommends one or two full pages.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a CV be in Slovakia?

One page, two full pages at most, say the career counsellors at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. They suggest a single page for positions with many applicants and allow academic CVs to run longer.

Should I put my date of birth on a Slovak CV?

The Trenčín careers deck says not to be afraid to include it; EURES and UPJŠ do not address it. The same deck says to leave out marital status and nationality.

Do Slovak CVs include a photo?

The Trenčín deck recommends a current formal portrait; EURES and UPJŠ do not mention photos. Resumity templates print no photo, so add one in Word to the DOCX file if you want it.

What is the data consent sentence in a Slovak application?

A short statement that you agree to the employer processing and storing your personal data. EURES says to attach it so the employer can enter your application in its database; the Trenčín deck cites Act No. 18/2018 Coll. in its wording.

Are references expected on a Slovak CV?

The Trenčín deck calls them desirable. Ask each person for consent first and let them know which jobs you have applied for.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Leslie PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
