South African CV template: how to set out your CV
Short answer
Henrietta suits a South African CV: a short profile, jobs newest first, education with your matric results, a skills grid and referees. UCT's Careers Service says CVs are typically two pages, should not carry a photograph unless the employer asks, and go out with a cover letter, ID or passport, certificates and academic records. The fictional sample is a graduate data analyst in Cape Town.

Why Henrietta suits a South Africa resume
Henrietta prints a summary, then work experience, then education and a skills grid, in black and grey on one column. UCT asks for reverse chronological order, one font at 10 to 12 points and plain rather than decorated templates, and UKZN's handbook favours clean sans-serif type; this page follows all of that.
Second choice: Meridian. Meridian puts skills before the jobs, a fit for experienced applicants in technical fields.
What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order
Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. UCT calls the profile optional: if you use it, keep it specific, no longer than four points, and about your education, interests and skills.
- Work Experience. UCT counts part-time, vacation, volunteer and internship work and asks for action words that show your impact. List everything newest first.
- Education. UCT's example lists degrees newest first with merit awards and averages, then the National Senior Certificate (matric) with distinctions and school leadership roles. Put online courses under a separate heading.
- Skills. UCT suggests five to seven skills, each with evidence of where you used it, from technical and IT skills to communication. UKZN also asks whether you hold a driver's licence, so add it if the job needs one.
- Referees. Use the extra list for referees. UCT's example gives each referee's name, position, organisation and email only; UKZN's handbook lists name, relationship, company, address, phone and email. Ask them first.

How to make the sample yours
Two pages, A4
UCT says CVs are typically two pages unless the employer asks otherwise, and UKZN says almost all CVs should be no longer than two sides of A4. Academic CVs can run longer.
No photo unless asked
UCT says not to include a photograph unless the employer requests one. Resumity templates print none, so leave it out by default.
Send the ID with the application
UCT lists the cover letter, ID or passport, certificates and academic records as the application package that goes with the CV. Keep them as separate attachments rather than adding your ID number to the CV.
Matric still counts early on
UCT's example shows the National Senior Certificate with distinctions and school roles under education. Shorten it to one line once you have a degree and work history.
Send a PDF
UKZN says either format is usually accepted but a PDF is recommended because it looks the same on every computer. The page this template exports keeps its layout as a PDF.

Mistakes to avoid
- A photograph, unless the employer asks for one, as UCT advises.
- More than two pages for a job application, outside academic CVs.
- Claiming skills without evidence; UCT asks for examples of where you used each one.
- Family or friends as referees, which UKZN's handbook tells you to avoid.
- Spelling errors and typos; UCT says applications can be rejected for them.

We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a CV be in South Africa?
Typically two pages, according to UCT's Careers Service, unless the employer asks otherwise; UKZN says almost all CVs should fit two sides of A4. Academic CVs can be longer.
Should I put a photo on a South African CV?
No, unless the employer asks for one. UCT's Careers Service says not to include a photograph by default, and Resumity templates print none.
Do I put my ID number on my CV?
UCT lists your ID or passport as part of the application package sent with the CV, alongside the cover letter, certificates and academic records. Attach it separately when an advert asks for it.
Should I list my matric results?
Early in your career, yes. UCT's example lists the National Senior Certificate with distinctions and school leadership roles. Shorten it once you have a degree and work history.
Who should my referees be?
UKZN's handbook suggests former supervisors, co-workers, clients, teachers or organisations you volunteered for, and says to avoid family and friends. Ask each referee before you list them.
Should I send a Word file or a PDF?
UKZN says both are usually accepted but recommends a PDF, because it looks the same on any computer.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 6 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
