Resume template for Turkey: how to lay out a Turkish özgeçmiş

Henrietta prints education immediately after experience, earlier than the other six templates do, which suits a Turkish CV where the degree, GPA and exchange semester still get a close read. Its left-aligned name and black and grey Inter type give an engineering application a plain, conventional business look.

Second choice: Catalyst. Catalyst drops the career objective and opens on the latest job, for senior engineers whose recent programmes say more than their degree.

Henrietta template details and test results

Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

1. Professional Summary. Both Turkish guides ask for a short career objective: one paragraph stating the aim of the application and the qualities that fit the position. Write it for the vacancy in front of you; the sample names the parts it designs and the R&D role it wants next.
2. Work Experience. Istinye University's guide asks for the title, company, city and month-and-year dates, newest first. Aydın Adnan Menderes University's guidance adds that a company name and a title alone tell a manager nothing: say what you did, in what setting and with how many people, then what you achieved.
3. Education. Istinye lists the university, degree and major, graduation date and any exchange programme, with honours and a GPA if it is 3.00 or above on a 4.0 scale. It also says to include high school but not primary or middle school, which the sample does in one line.
4. Skills. Istinye wants languages shown with a standard measure, such as a course level or TOEFL result, and ADÜ asks for reading, speaking and writing levels separately. Henrietta prints the skill groups as unlabelled columns, so keep the languages together in one of them.
5. Certifications. Both guides give certificates and courses a heading of their own. Henrietta prints them near the end; if a vacancy names one as a requirement, mention it in the career objective as well.
6. References. Turkish guides expect references on the page. Istinye suggests two or three, ideally managers from your jobs or an academic adviser, with current phone, email and position, after you have asked them. ADÜ rules out family members and offers "Talep edildiğinde verilecektir" (available on request) as the alternative.

• Filling the top of the page with marital status, military service, three email addresses and two phone numbers; ADÜ says this makes you look unable to set priorities.
• Listing referees you have not asked. Istinye says to get permission first, and ADÜ says to tell them in advance.
• Naming relatives as references, which ADÜ's guidance rules out.
• Writing "good English" with no measure, when Istinye asks for a standard one such as a TOEFL score.
• A blurred or casual photo; ADÜ asks for a photo in a suit with a plain background.
