Backend developer resume template

Short answer

Catalyst fits an experienced backend developer: it opens on your latest job instead of a summary, so the first thing a reader sees is the API you own and how much traffic it carries. The fictional sample is a senior Node.js and PostgreSQL developer at a freight marketplace, with bullets on latency, a table partitioning project, an event queue and leading the on-call rotation.

Why Catalyst suits a backend developer resume

Catalyst prints no summary and goes straight from the header to work experience, which suits a senior developer whose current role is the strongest argument. Its large left-aligned name and teal headings in IBM Plex Sans look technical without being busy, and skills follow the jobs as labelled rows.

Second choice: FAANGPath. FAANGPath puts a summary and the skills block above the jobs; pick it if you are earlier in your career or changing stacks and want the languages read first.

Catalyst template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Catalyst's order

Catalyst prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Work Experience. With no summary on the page, the headline under your name does that job: "Senior Backend Developer, Node.js and PostgreSQL". Then open each role with the system you own and its load (requests a day, data size, consumers), followed by the change you made and what it did to latency, errors or cost.
  2. Skills. Group by layer: languages and runtimes, then data stores, messaging, cloud and observability. Name the engine and the broker rather than "SQL and NoSQL"; backend screens often filter on PostgreSQL, Kafka or Redis by name.
  3. Education. One line. Senior backend roles rarely weigh the degree, but leave it in: some employers still require one on paper.
  4. Certifications. A cloud certification is a small plus, not a substitute for production work, and Catalyst prints it at the end. Use the exact name, for example AWS Certified Developer - Associate, with the year.

Experience

Senior Backend Developer, Routewise Freight, Chicago, IL (02/2022 to Present)

  • Own the quoting API (Node.js, TypeScript) at about 2 million requests a day; brought p99 latency from 1.2 s to 350 ms with query rewrites and a Redis cache for lane rates.
  • Planned and ran the zero-downtime partitioning of a 900 GB orders table in PostgreSQL, with a dual-write period and a tested rollback.
  • Moved carrier webhooks onto Kafka with retries and a dead-letter topic; support tickets about missing status updates stopped.
  • Lead the backend on-call rotation of six engineers and wrote the incident review template the team now uses.

Backend Developer, Fennimore Health Billing, Milwaukee, WI (06/2018 to 01/2022)

  • Built REST endpoints for claim submission in Node.js and Express, documented in OpenAPI and used by three partner clinic systems.
  • Added idempotency keys to payment posting after a duplicate-charge incident; no duplicates since the change shipped.
  • Cut the nightly reconciliation job from four hours to 40 minutes by batching database writes.

Education

BS, Computer Engineering, Lakemont University (05/2018)

Certifications

  • AWS Certified Developer - Associate, Amazon Web Services (2025)

Skills

TypeScript, Node.js, SQL, REST and OpenAPI, Event-driven design, Schema migrations, PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, AWS (ECS, RDS, SQS), Docker, Grafana, Incident command, Mentoring

How to make the sample yours

Put your own traffic and data numbers in

The sample quotes about two million requests a day and a 900 GB table. Use your real orders of magnitude; a reader uses them to judge whether your experience matches the size of their system.

Spell out how one migration was made safe

The partitioning bullet names the method (dual writes, a tested rollback). Interviewers often ask how you changed a live system without an outage, and a bullet that shows the method hands them the question.

Swap the runtime for yours

If you run Java, Go, Python or .NET services, change the headline and skills, and keep the shape of each bullet: system, load, change, result.

State your on-call role plainly

Lead, member or escalation point: say which. Leading a rotation signals operational ownership that feature work alone does not.

Name who consumes your APIs

Partner clinics, a mobile app, three internal teams. Consumers show that your interfaces had to stay stable and documented, and OpenAPI or gRPC contracts are worth naming.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • backend development
  • Node.js
  • TypeScript
  • PostgreSQL
  • Redis
  • Kafka
  • REST API design
  • OpenAPI
  • event-driven architecture
  • database migrations
  • idempotency
  • p99 latency
  • observability
  • on-call

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing a summary paragraph for Catalyst: it does not print one, so that text never reaches the page. Move the key line into the headline.
  • "Built scalable microservices" with no load figure. Scale is a number.
  • Every AWS service you have opened in the console. Keep the ones you have run in production.
  • Hiding incidents. A short line on an outage you led the fix for shows judgement under pressure.

How the sample PDF reads in text extractors

We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.

Frequently asked questions

Should a backend developer resume include a GitHub link?

Include it if it holds something you would happily discuss in an interview, such as a library or a well-documented service. Most backend work is private, so leave an empty profile off rather than linking it.

How technical can the bullets be?

Technical enough for an engineer to recognise the problem: p99 latency, partitioning and dead-letter topics are fine. Add the result in plain words so the recruiter who screens first understands it too.

Is a cloud certification worth listing for a backend role?

List it if you hold it. It shows you studied the platform, but hiring managers weigh the services you have actually run more heavily.

How do I show system design experience without a staff title?

Name design decisions you made and why: a queue instead of a cron job, partitioning a table, adding idempotency keys. The reasoning is the evidence.

How far back should a senior backend developer go?

Ten to fifteen years is plenty. Older roles can shrink to a title, company and dates, or go entirely if the technology has nothing to do with the job.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Catalyst PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 4 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
