Doctor and physician resume template

Short answer

Catalyst suits a practising doctor whose current post carries the application. It opens on experience and prints no summary, so the headline states specialty and board certification, and the first bullets show the service you work on, your daily load and the quality work behind it. The fictional sample is a board-certified internal medicine hospitalist with six years in practice, resident teaching and residency listed under education.

Why Catalyst suits a doctor resume

Catalyst begins with work experience and skips the summary, which suits a physician whose current hospital or practice post is what a medical director reads first. Its teal headings over full-width rules keep clinical posts, training and licenses clearly apart, and the headline under the name carries specialty and board status, since certifications print near the end.

Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta keeps a summary and prints education right after experience; choose it as a resident or new attending whose training is the main story.

Catalyst template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Catalyst's order

Catalyst prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Work Experience. Each post with hospital or practice type, service and load: "hospitalist, 16 to 18 patients a day, seven on and seven off". Then quality, leadership and teaching, each with one result. A short moonlighting post can sit under the main one.
  2. Skills. Clinical areas and the procedures you perform, then the EHR. Keep it short; for a physician, posts and board status carry most of the weight.
  3. Education. Residency and fellowship as separate entries with program, specialty and exact dates, then the MD or DO, then the bachelor's. Mention USMLE (Step 1, Step 2 CK, Step 3) only if the posting asks or you are early in your career.
  4. Certifications. Board certification with the board and year, each active state medical license, then ACLS. ABMS describes certification as an independent evaluation followed by continuing certification, so note that yours is current.
  5. Teaching and committees. "Teaching and committees" holds resident and student teaching, committee roles and talks you gave. Academic posts that want the full record will ask for a CV.

How to make the sample yours

Put specialty and board status in the headline

Replace "Internal Medicine, ABIM Board Certified" with your specialty and board, or "board eligible" with your exam date if you have not certified yet.

Give your load in your specialty's unit

Daily census for hospital medicine, patients per day or panel size for clinic work, cases per year for surgery. Use the figure your department reports.

Keep one quality result

Length of stay, readmissions, time to antibiotics, screening rates: one measure you worked on, the period, and whether you led or contributed.

List every active license

One line per state with "current", plus any application underway in the state you are applying to.

Resident or fellow? Use another template

Catalyst places training after skills. A resident is better served by Henrietta, which keeps a summary and puts education right after experience.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • physician
  • hospital medicine
  • internal medicine
  • board certified
  • inpatient care
  • patient census
  • length of stay
  • readmission reduction
  • care transitions
  • sepsis management
  • resident teaching
  • quality improvement
  • Epic
  • interdisciplinary rounds
  • state medical license

Mistakes to avoid

  • Sending a long academic CV to a community hospital that asked for a resume; follow the posting.
  • Patient details, even in anonymised case stories.
  • Vague residency and fellowship dates; credentialing teams check them against their records.
  • Listing every conference attended instead of the talks you gave and committees you led.

Frequently asked questions

Should a doctor use a resume or a CV?

Follow the posting. Academic medical centers and fellowship programs usually expect a full CV with publications and teaching. Community hospitals, group practices and nonclinical roles often accept a two-page resume like this one.

How do I list residency and fellowship on a resume?

As education entries, most recent first, each with the program, specialty and exact start and end months. Add chief resident or other titles in the same entry.

Should I list my USMLE scores?

Usually not once you are board certified. The USMLE, owned by the Federation of State Medical Boards and the National Board of Medical Examiners, has three steps (Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 3); early-career doctors can note that all three are passed if a posting asks.

How do I show leadership as a physician?

Committee roles, quality projects, teaching titles and any medical director duties, each with what changed. "Chair, sepsis committee" with one result says more than a list of memberships.

How long should a doctor resume be?

Two pages for most practising physicians. Keep the current post, board status and licenses on page one.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Catalyst PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 6 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
