Nurse practitioner resume template
Short answer
Catalyst suits an experienced nurse practitioner whose current clinic job carries the application. It opens on work experience and prints no summary, so the headline under your name states specialty, board certification and license, and the first bullets show patient volume and scope. The fictional sample is a family NP in Colorado primary care who spent six years as an emergency department nurse first.

Why Catalyst suits a nurse practitioner resume
Catalyst starts with experience and prints no summary, so a clinical director reaches your visit volume, panel and scope at once. Its teal headings over full-width rules separate the NP post from the earlier RN job, and because certifications print near the end, the headline carries "FNP-BC, APRN".
Second choice: Leslie. Leslie keeps a summary and prints experience before skills; choose it as a new NP who needs two lines on rotations and the RN background.
What goes in each section, in Catalyst's order
Catalyst prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Work Experience. Lead the NP job with setting, population and volume ("family practice, about 22 patients a day, newborn to geriatric"), then conditions you manage, procedures you perform and one quality result. Keep the RN job to the bullets that matter for the new post: triage, acute assessment, precepting.
- Skills. Clinical work in the first row (chronic disease management, preventive visits, procedures such as incision and drainage or joint injections), then the EHR and point-of-care tools. Catalyst prints these as labelled rows.
- Education. MSN or DNP with the NP population focus and year, then the BSN. A detail line with supervised clinical hours helps in the first year or two after graduating.
- Certifications. Board certification with its exact letters and certifying body, then state APRN and RN licenses, then BLS and ACLS (PALS if you see children in urgent care). ANCC's FNP-BC is valid for five years and AANPCB certifications renew every five years, so add expiry dates.
- Precepting and committees. "Precepting and committees" shows work beyond your own schedule: NP students you precept, quality or protocol committees, a clinic workflow you own.

How to make the sample yours
Copy your credential letters exactly
Replace "FNP-BC" with the letters on your own certificate and the population focus. Family, adult-gerontology and psychiatric NP postings are not interchangeable, so the headline has to match the post.
State your volume and panel
Patients a day and panel size, from your own schedule reports. If you work in urgent care or a hospital service, give visits per shift or census instead.
Keep one quality measure
A1c control, screening rates, readmissions or access times: one measure your clinic tracked, with the period and your part in it.
Name your EHR
Swap Epic for the system you chart in (athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, Cerner). Being able to chart in a clinic's system from the first week is a practical advantage.
New NP? Add rotations
Add a "Clinical rotations" list with each site, specialty and hours, and keep the RN job as the main experience entry until you have NP work to show.
Keywords to keep where they are true

Mistakes to avoid
- Giving the RN job as much space as the NP job; the reader is hiring a provider.
- Using credential letters loosely; copy them from your certificate and name the body that awarded them.
- Patient details, or photos from procedures on a linked profile.
- Leaving out the state of licensure, so a clinic cannot tell whether you can start there now.
How the sample PDF reads in text extractors
We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.

Frequently asked questions
Where should a nurse practitioner put board certification on a resume?
In the headline next to your title, and in full in the certifications list with the certifying body and expiry date. Resumity templates print certifications near the end, so the headline is where a recruiter sees it first.
How do I write a resume as a new nurse practitioner?
Lead with clinical rotations: site, specialty, hours, patient population and the procedures you did. Keep the RN job, focused on assessment and acute care, and put the certification exam date in the headline if you have not sat it yet.
Should I list my license or NPI numbers?
Leave the numbers off. Employers collect them during credentialing; naming the license type and state on the resume is enough.
How do I show the move from RN to NP?
Put the NP job first and cut the RN job to the bullets that support provider work: triage, acute assessment, charge duties, precepting. The education entry shows the NP degree and its clinical hours.
How long should a nurse practitioner resume be?
One to two pages. Two is fine with an RN career behind you; keep the NP job, the license and the certification on page one.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Catalyst PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
