Physician assistant resume template

Short answer

Henrietta suits a physician assistant, especially a new graduate. It prints education straight after work experience, so the PA program sits near the top, in a plain layout that hospital and practice recruiters read without effort. The fictional sample is a newly certified PA-C aiming at emergency medicine, with patient care hours as an EMT and an emergency department scribe, and eight clinical rotations listed at the end.

Why Henrietta suits a physician assistant resume

Henrietta prints education directly after experience, which for a new PA puts the master's program just below the patient care jobs rather than after a skills block. Its three-column skills grid holds short procedure names (suturing, splinting, incision and drainage), and the black-and-grey layout reads as conventional in a hospital or group practice.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian prints skills before experience; choose it once you have PA jobs and want your procedures read before the work history.

Henrietta template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order

Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. PA-C status (or your PANCE date), the specialty you want and the patient care background behind you. Name two or three rotation areas that match the job.
  2. Work Experience. For a new graduate, the patient care jobs from before PA school (EMT, scribe, CNA, medical assistant) with hours and what you did yourself. Once you have PA work, it replaces them: setting, patients per shift, procedures, the team you work in.
  3. Education. Master's in PA studies with the program and graduation date, then the bachelor's. NCCPA only lets graduates of ARC-PA accredited programs sit the PANCE, so note the accreditation in the detail line.
  4. Skills. Procedures and clinical skills you performed on rotations or in practice, then the EHR and clinical references. Henrietta's grid drops the group labels, so lead with procedures.
  5. Certifications. NCCPA certification with the date, then BLS, ACLS and PALS. Put state license status ("Utah license application submitted") in the summary, where a recruiter checking your start date will see it.
  6. Clinical rotations. "Clinical rotations", one line each: specialty, setting and length. Keep all of them in your first year out; after that, cut to the ones that match the post.

How to make the sample yours

Set the PA-C line to your status

Before you pass the PANCE, write "PANCE scheduled 12/2026" in the headline instead of PA-C. Afterwards, add PA-C and your license status.

Add detail to the matching rotations

For the two rotations closest to the job, add one detail in the line (patient population, procedures, setting). The others stay as one short line each.

Report patient care hours as logged

Use the hours you documented for your PA school application. Employers and programs can compare them, so do not round up.

Name the specialty you want

Emergency medicine, orthopedics, dermatology and primary care hire for different strengths. Put the target in the headline and order rotations to match.

Experienced PA? Change the shape

Replace the scribe and EMT jobs with your PA posts, trim the rotations to a line or drop them, and consider Meridian so procedures come before the work history.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • NCCPA

  • patient assessment
  • history and physical
  • differential diagnosis

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing PA-C before you have passed the PANCE and NCCPA has certified you.
  • Rotation bullets that repeat "assisted with patient care" eight times; one line per rotation is enough.
  • Rounding up patient care hours from scribe or EMT work.
  • Leaving out your license status, so a hiring team cannot tell when you could start.

Frequently asked questions

When can I put PA-C on my resume?

After you pass the PANCE and NCCPA certifies you. NCCPA says PAs may use PA-C while their certification is current. Before that, write "PANCE scheduled" with the month.

How do I list clinical rotations on a PA resume?

One line each: specialty, setting and length. Put the rotations closest to the job first, and give those one extra detail such as procedures or the patient population.

Should I keep patient care jobs from before PA school?

Yes, while you are new. They show you have worked with patients and in a clinical team. After a year or two of PA work, cut them to a line or drop them.

What changes on an experienced physician assistant resume?

PA jobs lead, each with setting, patients per shift or day, procedures, and any teaching or quality role. Rotations and pre-PA jobs shrink or go.

How long should a physician assistant resume be?

One page for a new graduate; two once you have several PA posts to describe.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 6 section headings and all 6 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
