Medical assistant resume template
Short answer
Meridian suits a medical assistant because it prints skills above work experience, so the clinical tasks you handle on day one (vitals, vaccines, blood draws, EKGs) and the EHR you chart in are read first. It uses no colour and prints cleanly. The fictional sample is a CMA (AAMA) in a busy family and pediatric practice who started at an orthopedic front desk, with rooming volume and a prior authorization fix.

Why Meridian suits a medical assistant resume
Meridian's labelled skill rows sit above the job history, so a practice manager checks clinical procedures, front-office tasks and the EHR before reading any job. That fits a role hired largely on what you can do without supervision, and the black-and-grey page copies cleanly for a clinic's paper file.
Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta prints education right after experience; choose it as a recent program graduate whose externship and new credential are the main story.
What goes in each section, in Meridian's order
Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Credential and setting first ("CMA (AAMA) with four years in family practice"), then the clinical and front-office work you cover and the daily patient volume you are used to.
- Skills. Split clinical work (vitals, injections, venipuncture, EKG, point-of-care tests) from administrative work (scheduling, insurance checks, prior authorizations, referrals), and put the EHR on the Tools row. Meridian prints the row labels, so both halves of the job are visible.
- Work Experience. Patients roomed per day, providers and specialty, then one thing that improved because of you: fewer overdue vaccines, faster authorizations, a supply room that stopped running out. Front desk jobs keep their insurance and scheduling bullets.
- Education. MA program, school and completion date, with the externship site and hours as a detail. NHA's CCMA accepts either a completed MA program or supervised work experience, so if you qualified through work, say so in the summary.
- Certifications. Your credential written exactly, with the year, then BLS. The CMA (AAMA) is recertified every 60 months and the NHA CCMA every two years, so check the date before you send the resume.

How to make the sample yours
Write the credential exactly
Use the letters and body as they appear on your certificate: "CMA (AAMA)" or "CCMA (NHA)". Put it in the headline too, since certifications print near the end of the page.
Give your rooming volume
Patients roomed per day and how many providers you support. Replace the sample's 25 to 30 with your own typical day.
Keep only procedures you do regularly
List procedures you perform in your current job. Ones you only observed during the externship can be left out or named as externship experience.
Match the specialty
Pediatrics, dermatology, cardiology and orthopedics each lean on different tasks. Move the bullet that fits the posting's specialty to the top of your current job.
New graduate? Lead with the externship
Make the externship your first job entry with the site, specialty, hours and procedures, and keep retail or food service jobs below it with their customer-facing bullets.

Frequently asked questions
Which medical assistant certification should I put on my resume?
The one you hold, written exactly: CMA (AAMA) from the American Association of Medical Assistants, CCMA from the National Healthcareer Association, or another. Add the year and keep it current; the CMA (AAMA) recertifies every 60 months and the CCMA every two years.
How do I write a medical assistant resume with no experience?
Treat the externship as your first job: site, specialty, hours and the procedures you performed. Customer-facing jobs go below it, and the certification (or your exam date) goes in the headline.
Should clinical and administrative skills be listed separately?
Yes. Many medical assistant jobs mix both, in different proportions. Separate rows let a practice manager see each half at a glance and match it to the opening.
How do I move from the front desk to a clinical medical assistant role?
Finish an MA program, then lead with the externship's clinical work and your new credential. Keep the front desk job and its insurance and scheduling bullets: an MA who can cover check-in on a short-staffed day is useful.
How long should a medical assistant resume be?
One page. Two jobs, a skills block, one education line and two certifications fit easily.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
