Solutions architect resume template

Short answer

FAANGPath fits solutions architects: the platforms, patterns and standards you design with print in skills rows before the jobs. The fictional sample is an in-house solutions architect at a Raleigh insurer who was a senior Java engineer, with a claims platform moved to AWS, an event-driven integration design, lower hosting costs, architecture decision records, a review board seat and two AWS Solutions Architect certifications.

Why FAANGPath suits a solutions architect resume

FAANGPath is the minimal technical layout with labelled skill rows above work experience, so cloud platforms, integration patterns, security and data design are read before the projects. Architecture hiring managers screen on that breadth first, then look for one or two systems you shaped end to end.

Second choice: Meridian. Meridian shares the skills-first order with grey rules beside each heading, a softer page for architects in consulting or customer-facing roles.

FAANGPath template details and test results

What goes in each section, in FAANGPath's order

FAANGPath prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Say whether you are in-house, at a consultancy or at a vendor, the domain you design for, the platforms you know best, and the scale of systems you shape (users, transactions, data volume, teams). "Solutions architect" covers presales, delivery and internal design roles, so place yourself.
  2. Skills. Technical lists design areas: cloud architecture, integration and event-driven patterns, API design, identity and security, data architecture, resilience and cost. Tools lists cloud services, infrastructure as code, diagramming and the languages you can still read and review.
  3. Work Experience. Describe systems you designed and what happened: migrations completed, availability and latency met, costs reduced, teams unblocked, risks retired. Name your part (designed, reviewed, led) and the trade-off you chose, which is what interviewers will ask about.
  4. Education. Computer science, engineering or information systems on one line. Architects are hired on systems shipped, not the school.
  5. Certifications. AWS describes its Solutions Architect Associate exam as 65 questions in 130 minutes and recommends at least a year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions on AWS. List cloud certifications with the level and year; FAANGPath prints them last, so name the main one in the headline.

Raleigh, NC | adebayo.ogunleye@example.com | (919) 555-0127 | linkedin.com/in/sample-adebayo-ogunleye | github.com/sample-adebayo-ogunleye

Solutions architect at a regional property and casualty insurer, designing cloud and integration architecture for claims and policy systems used by 1,800 staff and 600 independent agents. Eight years as a Java engineer first, so designs come with working reference code and realistic delivery plans.

Experience

Solutions Architect, Piedmont Mutual Insurance, Raleigh, NC (03/2022 to Present)

  • Designed the move of the claims platform from a data centre to AWS (containers on ECS, Aurora PostgreSQL, S3), completed in 14 months with no unplanned downtime at cutover.
  • Replaced nightly batch file transfers between policy and claims with an event-driven design on EventBridge and SQS, cutting update delays from 24 hours to under a minute.
  • Lowered claims hosting costs by about 30% against the data centre baseline with right-sizing, autoscaling and storage tiering.
  • Introduced architecture decision records and a lightweight review board; 40 decisions recorded in the first year.
  • Set reference architectures for agent-facing APIs, including OAuth 2.0 with the identity team and rate limiting.

Senior Software Engineer, Piedmont Mutual Insurance, Raleigh, NC (06/2016 to 02/2022)

  • Built Java and Spring services for first notice of loss and claim payments.
  • Led the team's move to automated deployments, from monthly releases to weekly.
  • Mentored four engineers and ran the internal design review sessions.

Education

BS, Computer Science, Neuse River University (05/2014)

Certifications

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Professional, Amazon Web Services (2025)
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Associate, Amazon Web Services (2022)

Skills

Cloud architecture, Event-driven design, API design and security, Data migration strategy, Resilience and disaster recovery, Cost optimisation, AWS (ECS, Lambda, Aurora, EventBridge, SQS), Terraform, Java and Spring, Structurizr and C4 diagrams, GitHub Actions, Architecture reviews, Writing decision records, Explaining trade-offs to business leaders

How to make the sample yours

Show decisions, not just diagrams

Architecture decision records, option papers and review board outcomes show judgement. One bullet on a trade-off you made, and why, says more than a list of services.

Tie design to cost and risk

Hosting cost per month or per transaction, recovery time objectives met, vulnerabilities closed, licence spend removed. Business leaders approve architecture on these terms.

Presales architects

Vendor and partner solutions architects should lead with deals supported, proofs of concept delivered, win rate where measured and customer architectures designed. Keep one delivery bullet to show depth.

From senior engineer to architect

Show the shift from building one service to shaping many: standards you wrote, teams you advised, cross-team designs you led. Keep a little hands-on evidence so you do not look detached from code.

Match the cloud in the posting

If the posting is Azure or Google Cloud and your depth is AWS, say which patterns carry over and any training on the target platform. Do not relabel AWS services as Azure ones.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.

  • solutions architecture
  • cloud architecture
  • AWS
  • system design
  • event-driven architecture
  • API design
  • microservices
  • integration patterns
  • infrastructure as code
  • security architecture
  • high availability
  • cost optimisation
  • architecture decision records
  • cloud migration
  • technical leadership

Mistakes to avoid

  • Long lists of cloud services with no system you built from them.
  • Claiming sole design credit for platforms many architects shaped.
  • Internal system names and diagrams that reveal security details.
  • Dropping all hands-on evidence; hiring managers want architects who can still review code.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move from software engineer to solutions architect?

Take on cross-team design work: write designs, lead reviews, set standards, own a migration plan. Then show those on the resume as decisions and outcomes, with a cloud certification if your target uses one platform.

Should a solutions architect include diagrams or a portfolio?

Not on the resume. Link a short public write-up or a GitHub example if you have one, and keep internal diagrams private.

How is a presales solutions architect resume different?

It leads with customer outcomes: deals supported, proofs of concept delivered, designs adopted by customers. Delivery and in-house resumes lead with systems built and run.

Which certifications matter for solutions architects?

The ones for the platform you design on, at the associate or professional level, plus security or networking credentials where the role needs them. Give the year and keep them current.

How many projects should I describe?

Two or three systems in depth, each with scale, your role, the key decision and the result. A long list of small projects hides the work that shows architectural judgement.

Will applicant tracking systems read this FAANGPath PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
