Energy, utilities and renewables resume template
Short answer
Meridian works for most energy resumes because its labelled skill rows, printed above the jobs, carry the study software, equipment and standards power employers look for. The fictional sample is an interconnection engineer at a Phoenix solar and storage developer who spent five years in an electric cooperative's planning group, with a 1.4 GW project portfolio, upgrade costs cut, outage time reduced and a PE licence.

Why Meridian suits an energy resume
Meridian sets Technical, Tools and Soft Skills rows above work experience, and power sector recruiters often filter on software and domain terms first: PSS/E, load flow, protection, interconnection. The page has no colour at all, so it copies cleanly when a utility interview panel passes printouts around the table.
Second choice: FAANGPath. FAANGPath keeps skills ahead of jobs too, under full-width rules; pick it for energy software, forecasting or trading analytics roles.
What goes in each section, in Meridian's order
Meridian prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Energy is several industries sharing a grid: regulated utilities, renewable developers and installers, independent power producers, grid operators, and oil and gas. State which one you work in, the asset type (solar, wind, storage, gas plants, lines and substations) and the scale in megawatts, line miles or customers served.
- Skills. Technical holds power system skills (load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, interconnection studies, hosting capacity); Tools holds the software (PSS/E, CYME, ASPEN, AutoCAD Electrical, Python). Field roles swap these for equipment, voltage classes, switching and safety qualifications.
- Work Experience. Show capacity, cost and reliability in numbers: megawatts studied, built or commissioned, upgrade costs, outage duration and frequency, availability, safety record. One bullet per job on compliance (reliability standards, permits, inspections) answers a question almost every power employer raises.
- Education. Electrical engineering dominates utility and developer engineering roles; technicians list a lineworker, electrical or wind technician programme instead. Degree, school and year are enough.
- Certifications. Licences and safety training both belong here, with dates. Meridian prints this section at the end, so put a PE licence or a solar installer credential in the headline when the posting asks for it, as the sample does.

Jonah Whitaker
Interconnection Engineer, Solar and Storage (PE, Electrical Power)
Phoenix, AZ | jonah.whitaker@example.com | (602) 555-0171 | linkedin.com/in/sample-jonah-whitaker
Interconnection engineer at a utility-scale solar and battery storage developer, taking projects from queue application through system impact studies to signed agreements. Five years in a rural electric cooperative's planning group first, so anticipates the questions a utility reviewer will ask.
Experience
Interconnection Engineer, Sunmesa Renewables, Phoenix, AZ (02/2022 to Present)
- Manage interconnection for nine solar and storage projects totalling about 1.4 GW across two transmission providers.
- Review system impact and facilities studies and challenge upgrade assumptions; a revised scope cut assigned network upgrade costs on one 200 MW project by about $6 million.
- Run load flow and short circuit screening in PSS/E before each application to rank sites by expected upgrade cost.
- Work with EPC contractors on substation and protection design so commissioning tests match the interconnection agreement.
Distribution Planning Engineer, Desert Valley Electric Cooperative, Casa Grande, AZ (06/2017 to 01/2022)
- Planned feeder upgrades for a 1,900-mile distribution system serving about 48,000 members.
- Studied 140 rooftop and community solar applications for hosting capacity and protection impacts.
- Led a recloser and feeder reconfiguration programme that lowered average outage duration on the five worst circuits by about 20%.
- Wrote procedures and gathered evidence for the cooperative's protection system maintenance reviews.
Education
BS, Electrical Engineering, Sonoran Desert University (05/2017)
Certifications
- Professional Engineer (PE), Electrical Power, State of Arizona (2022)
Skills
Interconnection studies, Load flow and short circuit analysis, Protection coordination, Distribution planning, Hosting capacity analysis, Battery storage integration, PSS/E, CYME, ASPEN OneLiner, AutoCAD Electrical, Python (study automation), Utility and developer negotiations, Technical writing, Mentoring engineers in training
How to make the sample yours
Name the reliability rules you worked under
Under 18 CFR 40.2, each applicable user, owner or operator of the bulk power system must comply with the reliability standards FERC has approved. If you wrote procedures, gathered audit evidence or ran protection system maintenance under those standards, say which ones.
Bridge the utility and developer sides
The sample moved from a utility to a developer, and each side values someone who understands the other. Show the studies you wrote or reviewed and the upgrade costs or schedules you changed.
Installers and technicians
NABCEP lists six project credits in a decision-making role, OSHA 10 and 58 hours of training for its PV Installation Professional credential. Installers can keep this layout with systems installed, kilowatts, inspections passed first time and safety record.
Moving in from oil and gas
Process safety, rotating equipment, project controls and field operations carry into renewables and utilities. Translate barrels and wells into megawatts, sites and schedules, and keep your safety statistics.
Show schedule and money, not only engineering
Developers live by milestones: queue positions, study deposits, construction starts, commercial operation dates. One bullet on how you protected a schedule or cut a cost carries weight with them.
Keywords to keep where they are true

Mistakes to avoid
- "Passionate about clean energy" in place of systems, megawatts and studies.
- A whole project's megawatts claimed as yours when you handled one part; say which part.
- Field or substation applications without safety training and switching qualifications.
- Utility acronyms left unexplained when applying to a developer or consultancy that uses other terms.
How the sample PDF reads in text extractors
We exported this sample with Resumity's PDF exporter in Chrome on 2026-10-29 and read the file back with three open-source text extractors. This shows whether software that turns a PDF into text can recover it; it is not a test of any commercial applicant tracking system. How we test templates.

Frequently asked questions
How do I move into renewable energy from another engineering field?
Show the overlap first: electrical design, project controls, construction management, permitting, data analysis. Then learn the vocabulary of interconnection and power markets, and name any solar, storage or wind work, even a capstone or volunteer project.
Do energy resumes need safety information?
For field, plant and substation roles, yes: safety training with dates, switching or qualified electrical worker status, and your incident record. Office roles can keep a single line on site visits and safety training.
Should I list megawatts on my resume?
Yes, with your role made clear: studied, developed, built, commissioned or operated. Megawatts are the common unit across utilities, developers and investors.
Can utility lineworkers use this template?
Yes. Put journeyman or apprentice status in the headline, then voltage levels, equipment, storm restoration work and safety record in the bullets.
How do utility and developer resumes differ?
Utilities look for reliability, compliance and long-range planning; developers look for speed, cost and deal milestones. Keep the same facts but lead with the ones the employer's side cares about.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Meridian PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 8 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
