Gaming industry resume template

Short answer

Daniel is a good fit for gaming resumes outside engineering and art: producers, QA leads, community and live operations staff. Its skills grid sits above the jobs, so engines, trackers and platforms are seen early, and its pill headings soften the page. The fictional sample is an associate producer on a live-service multiplayer game in Austin who spent four years in QA, with update cadence, certification submissions, rating paperwork and crash data.

Why Daniel suits a gaming resume

Resumity suggests Daniel for product managers and designers, and game producers sit close to both: they plan releases and talk to design every day. The skills grid prints before work experience, so Jira, Perforce and the engine you use are visible before a QA title, and the rounded grey pill headings give a less severe page than rules alone.

Second choice: FAANGPath. FAANGPath has the same section order with labelled skill rows on a stricter page, better for gameplay programmers and technical artists who lead with languages and engines.

Daniel template details and test results

What goes in each section, in Daniel's order

Daniel prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.

  1. Professional Summary. Name the kind of game (live-service shooter, mobile puzzle, narrative console title), the platforms and your discipline. Studios staff by genre and platform as well as role, so "lifelong gamer" is wasted space while "nine shipped updates on console and PC" is not.
  2. Skills. Daniel prints three unlabelled columns, so make each one read on its own: production or QA methods first, then named tools (Jira, Confluence, Perforce, Unreal or Unity, a crash reporter), then how you work across disciplines. Engine and version control names are screened by almost every studio.
  3. Work Experience. Use shipped work as the unit: titles, updates, platforms, team size, milestone dates hit. Add one player-facing number (daily active players, retention, crash rate, review score change) and one about certification or rating work, since a failed submission can slip a launch.
  4. Projects. Game jam entries, mods or a small released title show you can finish something. Give the engine, team size, time frame and where it can be played.
  5. Education. Game design and computer science degrees are common, but many producers and QA staff hold unrelated ones. One line; shipped titles count for more.

Associate Producer, Live-Service Multiplayer Games

Austin, TX | riya.castellanos@example.com | (512) 555-0147 | linkedin.com/in/sample-riya-castellanos | sample-riya.itch.io

Associate producer on a live-service multiplayer game for console and PC, running the six-week update schedule, certification submissions and the weekly bug triage. Four years in QA before production, so test plans and repro steps are part of every release.

Experience

Associate Producer, Lone Comet Games, Austin, TX (06/2023 to Present)

  • Run the six-week update cadence for a 45-person team, from sprint planning in Jira to the go/no-go meeting; nine updates shipped on their announced dates.
  • Own console certification submissions; seven of the last nine builds passed on the first submission.
  • Prepared the content disclosure for the first paid expansion's age rating with the lead designer and legal.
  • Triage crash reports from telemetry with engineering each week; crashes per thousand sessions fell by about half over a year.
  • Write patch notes and the known issues post with the community team for every update.

QA Analyst, then QA Lead, Starlight Test Labs, Austin, TX (03/2019 to 05/2023)

  • Tested 14 console and PC titles for publisher clients, writing test plans and reproducible bug reports in Jira.
  • Led a team of eight testers on compliance passes against platform requirements before submission.
  • Cut "cannot reproduce" closures on the team's reports by adding video and build numbers to every ticket.

Projects

Lantern Keeper (game jam): A two-person, 48-hour puzzle game built in Unity for a regional game jam, free to play on itch.io.

  • Kept the scope board and cut features at hour 30 so the build shipped on time.

How to make the sample yours

List shipped titles plainly

Studio, title, platform, your role and release year. If a game is unannounced, describe it by genre and platform and never print a code name.

Use rating vocabulary correctly

The ESRB says ratings for boxed games come from the consensus of at least three trained raters, while games sold only online are rated through IARC. Interactive elements such as In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items) appear on the label but do not change the rating. If you prepared content disclosures, say for which release.

Name the platform requirements you met

Microsoft describes its Xbox Requirements as the policies and technical requirements all Xbox developers and publishers must conform to, tested by its certification team on retail hardware. A bullet about first-pass submissions, or about compliance testing in QA, shows you understand what stands between a build and players.

Carry over work from outside games

Software project managers, film and animation coordinators, esports organisers and community managers move into studios regularly. Lead the older job with schedules, release management, live audiences or moderation, whichever matches the studio role.

Adjust the sample for your discipline

QA leads open with test plans, bug volumes and compliance passes; community managers with channel growth and sentiment around launches; live operations staff with event calendars and revenue per player; designers with systems shipped and what playtests changed.

Keywords to keep where they are true

Mistakes to avoid

  • Opening with hours played or favourite franchises. Studios hire for shipped work and process.
  • Naming unannounced projects, code names or internal metrics covered by a non-disclosure agreement.
  • Listing every engine you have opened. Name the ones you shipped with or built a playable project in.
  • Giving a game's total sales or player count as your result. Say what you changed and what moved.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move from QA into game production?

Show the production work you already do in QA: planning test passes, scheduling, triage meetings, submission prep. Volunteer for release coordination, put the result in a bullet, then make "associate producer" your headline.

Do I need a portfolio for a non-art game job?

Not a visual one, but a list of shipped titles and one or two playable projects (game jams count) does the same job. Link them in the header.

Should I list games I worked on at an outsourcing or QA vendor?

Yes, if your contract allows it; many careers start with vendor credits. Name the platform and your role, and check the non-disclosure terms before naming the title.

What numbers should a gaming resume use?

Updates shipped on schedule, certification pass rate, crash rate per session, bug volumes, and retention or daily active players for features you owned. Use relative changes if exact figures are confidential.

Can I get a game industry job without a game design degree?

Yes. Production, QA, community, live operations and many business roles hire from software, film, events and customer service. A shipped project or a mod with real players helps more than coursework.

Will applicant tracking systems read this Daniel PDF?

The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 9 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
