Geologist resume template
Short answer
Henrietta suits a geologist: a conventional layout that runs summary, field and drilling work, then the geology degrees employers check closely, before an unlabelled skills grid. The fictional sample is a project geologist running gold drill programs in northern Nevada after three years logging core and sampling soil grids as a contractor. It shows how to size a drill program and where licensing exams belong.

Why Henrietta suits a geologist resume
Henrietta prints education straight after work experience, so a master's thesis, field camp or a specialist degree sits where a chief geologist looks next. Its black-and-grey business layout reads like a technical report, and the three-column skills grid holds short items such as core logging, mapping and Leapfrog without taking much room.
Second choice: Meridian. Meridian prints labelled skill rows above the jobs; better for GIS, geophysics or resource modelling roles where software leads the posting.
What goes in each section, in Henrietta's order
Henrietta prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Professional Summary. Specialty (exploration, mine geology, hydrogeology, geotechnical, petroleum), commodity or setting, years and the scale you work at. Name a PG license or passed ASBOG exams here, because certifications print last.
- Work Experience. Drill programs in metres or feet with the methods (RC, core, sonic, rotary), the contractors and staff you directed, the ground you mapped and the decisions your work changed: a target moved, a hole stopped early, a model rebuilt. QA/QC and site safety duties belong here too.
- Education. Degrees with the thesis topic and field area while you are early in your career. Put field camp on the detail line; a manager hiring for a field season wants to know you have mapped on your own.
- Skills. The grid drops group labels, so lead with field methods (logging, mapping, sampling), follow with software such as Leapfrog, ArcGIS or QGIS, and end with instruments like portable XRF.
- Certifications. Exams passed and licenses with state and year, then site safety training such as MSHA. Give the date of your latest annual refresher, since mine sites check it at the gate.

Ingrid Halvorsen
Project Geologist, Gold Exploration
Elko, NV | ingrid.halvorsen@example.com | (775) 555-0129 | linkedin.com/in/sample-ingrid-halvorsen
Exploration geologist with seven years on Carlin-type gold projects in northern Nevada. Plans and supervises RC and core drill programs of up to 25,000 m a season, maps alteration and structure, and builds lithology models for the resource team. MS in geology; passed the ASBOG Fundamentals of Geology exam.
Experience
Project Geologist, Tuscarora Ridge Gold, Elko, NV (04/2022 to Present)
- Plan and supervise RC and core drilling of 15,000 to 25,000 m a season on two gold projects, directing two drill contractors and four geotechnicians.
- Log core for lithology, alteration, oxidation and structure, and set sample intervals for assay.
- Insert certified standards, blanks and duplicates at about one in 20 samples and chase every failure with the lab before results enter the database.
- Mapped about 30 square kilometres at 1:5,000; a newly mapped fault zone moved two drill targets, and one became the project's main target.
- Build lithology and alteration models in Leapfrog Geo for the resource geologist and update them after each drilling phase.
Field Geologist (Contract), Basin and Range Geoscience Services, Reno, NV (06/2019 to 03/2022)
- Logged about 18,000 m of RC chips and core for six exploration clients in Nevada and Idaho.
- Ran soil and rock-chip sampling grids, about 2,400 samples, and screened soil pulps with portable XRF to rank anomalies before lab assays returned.
- Wrote weekly drilling summaries with collar maps and cross-sections for client geologists.
- Trained new geotechnicians on sample bagging, labelling and chain of custody.
Education
MS, Geology, University of the High Desert (05/2019). Thesis: structural controls on gold mineralization in a northern Nevada range
BS, Geology, Columbia Plateau College (05/2017). Six-week summer field camp in geologic mapping
Certifications
- Fundamentals of Geology (FG) Exam, passed, ASBOG (2020)
- MSHA Part 48 Annual Refresher Training, MSHA-approved instructor (2026)
Skills
Core and RC chip logging, Geologic and alteration mapping, Drill program supervision, QA/QC sampling, Structural interpretation, Soil and rock-chip geochemistry, Leapfrog Geo, ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, Portable XRF, Directing drill contractors, Technical report writing
How to make the sample yours
Size every drill program
Metres or feet per season, number of holes, rig types and the budget if you held it. "Supervised drilling" without a size could mean one hole or a whole district.
Name the deposit type and rocks
Carlin-type gold, porphyry copper, lithium clays, alluvial aquifers, landslide terrain. Hiring geologists look for someone who has already seen their kind of geology.
Show what your interpretation changed
A mapped fault that moved a target, a relogging pass that fixed the model, a soil grid that dropped a weak prospect early. Interpretation is what separates a geologist from a sampler.
Keep QA/QC visible
Standards, blanks and duplicates inserted, chain of custody kept, failures chased with the lab. Resource estimates rest on it, and senior geologists screen for it.
Rewrite for your branch
Hydrogeologists talk about wells, pumping tests and groundwater models; geotechnical geologists about boreholes, slope stability and site characterization; petroleum geologists about well logs and prospects. Use the vocabulary of the posting.

Mistakes to avoid
- Writing PG after your name before a state board has issued the license.
- Drill programs with no metres, hole counts or methods.
- A software list longer than the field work it supports.
- Every field area since undergraduate days instead of the ones that match the geology in the posting.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Professional Geologist license, and how do I show it?
It depends on the state where the work is done, not where you live. ASBOG, which writes the national exams, lists 30 states plus Puerto Rico that require geologists to be licensed or registered, and each state board issues its own license. Give the license with its state and year; if you are not licensed yet, list the exams you have passed.
How do the ASBOG exams fit into a geology career?
ASBOG's FAQ calls the Fundamentals of Geology exam the first step, required to become a Geologist-in-Training, and usually taken with a geology degree; the Practice of Geology exam generally follows a degree and three to five years of experience. Each state sets its own rules, so check the board where you plan to work.
Should an exploration geologist list MSHA training?
Yes, with the date of your last refresher. MSHA says federal law requires every miner to receive basic and annual refresher training, and its Part 48 rules cover surface mining of some metals, such as gold. Current training tells an operator you can go on site without waiting for a class.
Where do field camp and a thesis go on a geologist resume?
On the detail line of the education entry, while they are among your strongest evidence. After five or so years of drilling and mapping, cut each to a few words or drop field camp.
How do I move from mineral exploration into environmental or geotechnical work?
Lead with logging, sampling discipline and report writing, then rename the work in their terms: boreholes, groundwater, slope stability, site characterization. ASBOG lists groundwater protection, hazardous waste site monitoring and slope stability among regulated areas of practice, so a license weighs more in those jobs.
Should a geologist send a CV or a resume?
Companies and consultancies want a resume of one or two pages. Universities and research institutes ask for a CV with publications, conference talks and grants.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Henrietta PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 9 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.

- ASBOG (National Association of State Boards of Geology): Why Geology Licensure? (ASBOG provides the exams but does not license; state boards license; 30 states and Puerto Rico require licensing or registration of geologists; regulated practice includes groundwater protection, hazardous waste site monitoring, mineral resource development and slope stability)
- ASBOG (National Association of State Boards of Geology): Frequently Asked Questions (licensure rests on education, experience and examinations; the FG exam is the first step and required to become a Geologist-in-Training; the PG exam generally follows a degree and 3 to 5 years of experience; requirements vary by state; licensure depends on where the work is performed)
- Mine Safety and Health Administration: Training and Education (federal law requires all miners to receive basic and annual refresher training; Part 48 covers underground mining and surface mining of coal and some metals, like gold; Part 46 covers aggregates)
