Resume template for China: a one-page jianli that leads with work
Short answer
Catalyst fits a Chinese CV (jianli) for experienced applicants: it opens on your latest job, then skills, education, certificates and awards, with no padded self-introduction, which an article by Shanghai's human resources bureau on the national graduate jobs platform advises against. That article keeps the CV to one A4 page; Birmingham's careers service allows two. The fictional sample is a Shenzhen cross-border e-commerce operations manager.

Why Catalyst suits a China resume
Catalyst prints no summary and starts with the most recent job, so a manager's results are the first thing read, in line with the Shanghai bureau's advice to skip a long, empty self-introduction. Its single teal accent stays well inside the two-colour limit in Birmingham's guide, and IBM Plex Sans keeps the page plain.
Second choice: Henrietta. Henrietta adds a short profile at the top and puts education straight after the jobs, for applicants who want the personal profile Birmingham's guide calls crucial.
What goes in each section, in Catalyst's order
Catalyst prints its sections in a fixed order, the same in the PDF and the Word file. Here is that order for this sample, and what to put in each section.
- Work Experience. Newest first, with company, title and dates. The Shanghai bureau asks you to introduce a company the reader may not know in a sentence or two, as the sample's first bullet does, to start each line with a verb such as led or launched, and to back every claim with numbers.
- Skills. Group operations methods, software and languages. The national graduate jobs platform (ncss.cn) separates job-specific skills from general workplace skills such as spreadsheet and presentation work; list both, and give Mandarin, any dialect and English with a level.
- Education. Highest degree with school, major and start and end dates. The Shanghai bureau says recent graduates with good results can add GPA and class ranking; Birmingham adds that a well-ranked university is worth naming with its ranking for Chinese employers.
- Certifications. Certificates that prove a skill, in their own section. Birmingham lists them separately from awards; Catalyst prints them after education, so a certificate the advertisement demands should also appear in the first job's bullets.
- Awards. An awards list. Birmingham's Chinese CV guide gives awards and achievements from your studies or past jobs a section of their own. Keep each to one line with the year, and pick ones a hiring manager in your field would recognise.

How to make the sample yours
Aim for one page
The Shanghai human resources bureau's article on ncss.cn says to fit the CV on one A4 sheet and criticises three pages for a junior role. Birmingham's careers service says two pages are usually welcome but one is typically enough below ten years' experience. Resumity prints on A4.
Add the basic details employers expect
The Shanghai list of basic information covers name, gender, birth year and month, household registration (hukou), current district, years of work, political status and contact details, but no ID card number. Resumity templates have no fields for these; type the ones you want into the DOCX in Word, under your name.
Add a photo in Word
Birmingham lists a recent professional photograph among the personal details, and ncss.cn warns that an unsuitable photo can sink an application. Resumity templates print no photo, so insert a formal one into the DOCX in Word.
Put your Chinese name in too
For an English CV, Birmingham suggests repeating your name, address and Chinese company names in Chinese characters unless you are sure the reader works in English, and giving both names for multinational jobs. Add them in Word.
Keep the tone modest
Birmingham warns that bragging quickly makes a bad impression with Chinese employers; state the result and let it speak. The sample says "grew sales from USD 14 million to USD 21 million", not "outstanding growth leader".
Keywords to keep where they are true
Terms this kind of resume is usually searched for. Use the posting's exact wording, and only for work you have done.
- cross-border e-commerce
- marketplace operations
- product listings
- keyword advertising
- advertising cost of sales
- inventory replenishment
- overseas warehouse
- sales analysis
- customer service
- team management
- Excel
- Power BI
- CSCP
- English
Mistakes to avoid
- A template downloaded from a job site with its watermark still on it, one of the faults the Shanghai bureau sees at job fairs.
- Printing your ID card number; the Shanghai bureau says birth year and month already show your age.
- Describing the duties every person in the post would share; ncss.cn asks for your own tasks and the numbers behind them.
- Bold or italics on half the lines, which ncss.cn says spoils the layout and hides what matters.
- Self-praise with nothing behind it; Birmingham says modesty is expected and facts should speak for themselves.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a CV be in China?
Sources differ. The Shanghai human resources bureau's article on the national graduate jobs platform asks for one A4 page, while the University of Birmingham's guide says two pages are usually welcome and one is typically enough unless you have ten or more years of experience. One page is the safer default for a domestic employer.
Do Chinese employers expect a photo on a CV?
Usually. Birmingham lists a recent professional photograph among the personal details, and ncss.cn warns that a poorly chosen photo can rule you out. Resumity templates print no photo; insert a formal headshot into the DOCX in Word.
Which personal details go on a Chinese CV?
The Shanghai bureau lists name, gender, birth year and month, household registration, district of residence, years of work, political status and contact details, with no need for an ID number or full street address. Birmingham adds the highest qualification and a phone number with the international code.
Should my CV be in Chinese or English?
Match the employer. Birmingham suggests that Mandarin speakers applying to Chinese companies add a Chinese-language CV, up to two pages for each language, and that an English-only CV repeat your name and key company names in Chinese.
Should a Chinese CV include a self-evaluation or profile?
Opinions differ. Birmingham calls a factual personal profile crucial and says it often sits at the end; the Shanghai bureau warns against a long, empty self-introduction. Catalyst prints none; choose Henrietta if you want a short profile at the top.
Will applicant tracking systems read this Catalyst PDF?
The sample PDF read back with its contact details, all 5 section headings and all 7 bullets intact in three open-source text extractors (pdf.js, pdftotext and pypdf). Commercial systems such as Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo were not tested, and each employer configures its own.
